The P-47 was tough but it was not invincible.  One of my church members told me of the only time he was shot down. Late in 1944 he got bounced by a capable German pilot.   Couldn’t bail because the canopy was jammed. Belly landed in a field.  Didn’t know why the German strafe him. Farmer helped him get the canopy open. Never got a gun on the man. Good outcome. No one died.

This video was perfectly engineered to provide an excellent afternoon nap. Thank you! 😁

This was next-level storytelling. Not just a history lesson — this felt like sitting in the cockpit with the test pilot himself.

The way you broke down the engineering philosophy behind the *Republic P-47 Thunderbolt* was incredible. You didn’t just say it was “tough” — you showed why it was nearly impossible to kill.

That dive test, the 7G pullouts, the stability during full gun bursts… every detail made it clear this wasn’t just a plane — it was a flying tank built to bring pilots home.

And the real twist?
The Germans understood the threat… they just couldn’t do anything about it.

That final takeaway hit hard: knowing the truth in war means nothing if you don’t have the power to act on it.

Absolutely one of the most informative and well-told aviation stories on YouTube right now. 🔥

Good stuff!  Thanks for sharing.

How many P-47s were shot down?
Republic P-47 Thunderbolt - Wikipedia
3,499 P-47s SHOT DOWN

They called it the Jug because it was oversized non avionic looking, more of a clunck than streamline aircraft form fighter plane. Also when they found how much lead they could pour into it sometimes without it going down. That may be when Juggernaut played into their thinking I would think. The  German pilot who put the rest of his ammo into one came up alongside, looked at each other shook his head in disbelief wagged his wings and flew off. They stopped looking at like it was the serious threat it was. Especially when they experienced  the eight, yes eight .50 cal M2 BMG's firing into them. That could shred their plane in an instant. The Jug had the best dive performance. Im sure their initial scoff at the goofy looking fighter quickly tranformed into respect for the threat that it was especially as allied pilots gained experience with knowledge of the planes strenghths as well successful tactics. There became nothing derogatory about the name Jug.

It's not a D model

It constantly amazes me how much inaccurate BS there is in these video commentaries ! The P47 Thunderbolt was called the “JUG” because it looked like a MILK JUG !

The Germans couldn’t adapt.  Can the US’s military industrial complex adapt to cheap drones vs expensive airframes?  It’s not looking good.

USA California Los Angeles, thank you

Once more the commentary on the video is inaccurate BS ! The video still  clearly shows an early production P47 with an early production NON BUBBLE  canopy  !

More nonsense.

Amazing, went from german ridicule to german fear.
