In my judoka days (many years ago) I "experimented" practising left hand techniques with a right hand grip. This caught out my opponents by surprise. I ended up with more successes left than right. This strategy was necessary as all my opponents were very familiar with my tokui waza and were ready and waiting for it. Once I proved this strategy for myself, I began teaching this to my students. They also found success once they mastered the change of technique.

Im so glad for this follow up and analysis. Hashimoto is my favorite olympian from Japan. Its interesting to watch his gripping, he and I play the same way, not too concerned with keeping a grip or putting people into a set position, as long as theres space to turn one way or the other.

Hashimoto is a unic great world judoka with a 2 hands excellent technic and 1 hand throw.
I think that a will not see in the future a similar wonderful samouraï like him.

Hashimoto is a master of timing. He creates awkward situations for his opponents and then attacks at the right time. This is competition kuzushi. True Japanese Judo.

He’s such a unique judoka — really entertaining to watch! Strong physically, full of energy, and with a funny character that makes every match enjoyable. Great video, he’s definitely one of my favourite judokas!

Not many other judoka in the upcoming Physical: Asia (Kim Donghyun kinda counts) but good representation of fighters overall. Between the Mongolian wrestler Bayarsaikhan, the nak muay Superbon, the boxer Pacquiao and even MMA's good ol' Bobby Knuckles, this will be a ton of fun to watch.

I’m right handed and employed a similar left handed strategy when I competed. Very early on I realized it was a huge tactical advantage because it forces opponents into a left handed fight and throws them into a tizzy.
