For 17 years I kept a hummingbird feeder on my porch. They grew to know me. When the feeder got low the hummingbirds would look at me through the sliding glass door to make sure I knew that they wanted more nectar. They trained me very well 😊

Bring 4 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar to a boil. Let cool and put in a hummingbird feeder. Wash 1 -2 times a week with warm soapy water with a toothbrush to get rid of mold.

These little guys are sensitive to mold and it makes them sick.

I live in Ecuador and have so many on my patio at my feeders- mostly Empress Green and the Green Crowned birds. They rest on my shepherd’s hooks where the feeders hang and either sing at the top of their lungs or watch me through the window in the kitchen. They are very curious.

One crashed into my glass door fighting with another hummingbird and I tried to save it but couldn’t. The bird’s little heartbeat was so fast. He was so soft and beautiful in my hands but unfortunately, he didn’t make it.

We have 132 species of hummingbirds here and it’s magical to me.

My parents retired from Chicago to Redding, California, back in the late ‘70s. My mom was told to put feeders in her backyard trees. The little hummers came but migrated south when it got chilly. The following year when it turned warm, my mom heard a tapping at her kitchen window. There were the hummingbirds letting her know they were back in Redding and hungry. Amazing that after just 1 summer, they remembered the house that would have homemade nectar available to them all season. This routine continued year after year until my parents moved. Hopefully, the new owners put up some feeders for the little hummers.

Just seen them in slow motion is amazing. Once a hummingbird got into my bedroom and got stuck up in the ceiling in the skylight. I put a towel around a broom and held it up there for what seemed like an hour until it dropped itself on the cushion broom. It pretended to be dead, and so I took it outside and placed it on top of a surface that I knew the hummingbirds hung out on and stepped back about 10 feet and after a couple of minutes, it woke up and actually looked around and then flew off.

Makes me rethink and appreciate life even more. So many, apparently insignificant, things evolved over millions of years, all to interdependently sustain life on this planet. And yes, not to dismiss the creationists, evolution within a Grand Scale plan.

I have worked in the oilfields for 50 years and some times “offshore”. During the humming bird migration south I have seen them resting on the off shore drilling rigs.

I feel so much the better now for putting up my hummingbird feeder! After the little darlings are through sipping nectar, sugar water actually, they look at me and seem to say thank you! ♥
Sir David Attenborough is such a outstanding spokesman for the planet! 🌍
