The growing presence of wild boars in rural areas of São Paulo state has caused significant losses to local farmers. Originating from Europe and introduced to Brazil in the 1960s for meat production, these animals escaped from farms and proliferated without natural predators. This situation led IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) to authorize the controlled hunting of wild boars as a measure to protect crops.

Wild boars are known for destroying entire fields by digging up the soil in search of food. Furthermore, they can contaminate natural water sources and transmit diseases such as salmonella and toxoplasmosis. In regions near the state capital, cities like Bragança Paulista and Atibaia have already recorded occurrences of these animals.

To control this uncontrolled population, hunters use weapons authorized by the Brazilian Army and rely on sniffer dogs that help locate the wild pigs. The activity is regulated by a series of legal requirements that include specific licenses from IBAMA.

The economic impact is significant: producers report substantial crop losses due to the actions of wild boars. Furthermore, there are frequent reports of attacks on other domestic animals on the affected properties.
