Settlement was Germans that migrated through Russia to the US. My family went to the School. My great grandfather was born there in 1904. I have been in all three of the buildings. Great memories. That area has so much history that is being forgotten. Thanks for sharing.

The Wild Horse Post Office has a bit more history than was mentioned here. The Johnson sisters from Wild Horse were the first to send county star Loretta Lynn fan mail early in her career. This grew into them starting and managing Loretta's official fan club which became the blueprint for country music fan clubs going forward. The sisters then started the "International Fan Club Organization" (IFCO) and ended up managing 350 clubs, many for the biggest names in the industry. The Wild Horse Post Office was the post masters house, USPS was to close the office when that post master retired. The sisters had the fan club members petition the legislature to keep it open; it worked and convinced USPS to put in that modular office there today. The fan clubs operated in Wild Horse, primarily through mail; until 1991. There's some more in-depth articles about it online if you search!

Interesting fact. Wild Horse is where the Loretta Lynn fan club started.  The Lauretta Lynn fan club kept the post office open for years. Two sisters, the Johnson sisters started it.

You have to chuckle when you turned off US 40 onto C 94 the BIG sign telling you there is nothing for miles ahead. One of my favorite drives when going to Ft. Carson to see my son.

Wish you would have asked around about Firstview! My husband’s family owns the property on the south side! He farms the land today for his family.  The county has turned the north side into county dump. The family could have shared a lot more information with you. And Yes, on clear days you can see Pikes Peak!

Burlington, CO is a hidden gem! A movie theatre run by the community, a 19th century carousel, and a little Asian restaurant whose food rivals any on the west coast. Wonderful people.

I remember the restaurant that used to be in Punkin Center.  It used to be the only bathroom in a very long stretch between Western Kansas and Colorado Springs so was a welcome sight indeed.  In fact, if I remember right, my cousin was a waitress there for a while. Thanks so much for keeping these ghost towns “alive” and letting us visit them.

My wife's grandmother was school teacher in that schoolhouse in Aroya, She was also postmistress for a time. Her mother ran the hotel. The grandmother told stories of going to dances in Wild Horse.

You are a cool guy. I love watching the videos, much better than the fake people I see on T.V. anyday.

We got a kick out of watching this trip. We drove  through that area about 4 years ago. We started chuckling about the area because there was nothing in that area except fields of crops, huge fields. No houses in sight, no fences, no electric poles, just nothing. It made us think what it must have been like for pioneers traveling through fir the first time. It was a lot of fun. Finally got to I believe it was Cheyenne  Wells. Thanks for another trip down memory lane.  Still riding shotgun.

We lived on the JOD ranch in 1965. 27000 acres all around Aroya. Two bachelors lived at Aroya. One was a blacksmith. Great people around there on ranches. played cards at the school in Wild Horse

I drove from Bents Fort NHS to Burlington while on vacation in 1990. I drove right by the Sand Creek Massacre NHS which I had read about and through Cheyenne Wells. When I got to Burlington I stopped for gas and the wind was so strong that when I opened the door to the motorhome it slammed into the side of it. The wind was howling! Always enjoy your videos.

For my birthday a few years ago I got a great resource concerning Colorado Ghosttowns called "Colorado's Best Ghosttowns" by Kenneth Johnston. Like you noticed, when people think of ghosttowns in Colorado, they think of the mining towns in the mountains. However, half the state is on the High Plains, and there are a lot of good ghosttowns on the prairie as well.

For anyone who disparages the vast flatness of Kansas, know that eastern Colorado is far more desolate. As my family frequently traveled between Denver and Topeka during my youth, I was always struck by the isolation of the landscape west of the Kansas border.

Nice coverage of the Great Plains. US 40 along with the other numbered interstate roads most notably Route 66 will be celebrating their 100th anniversary on Veterans Day next year.

I love eastern Colorado, especially along the Arkansas River Valley. So many stories, lives, memories.
