I built Tamiya’s 1/24 Mazda 787B reissue kit and painted it completely in fluorescent orange.
This kit turned out to be much harder than I expected.
In this video, I go through the entire build, including body preparation, fluorescent orange paint tests, decal work, clear coating, polishing, final assembly, and the problems I ran into along the way.
Main topics covered:
• Comparing Gaia Notes and Mr. Color fluorescent orange
• Testing fluorescent orange over white, gray, and black undercoats
• Comparing fluorescent orange with regular orange
• Applying the many small decals on the Mazda 787B
• Clear coating over decals
• Polishing and finishing the body
• Painting window frames and small details
• Body fitment problems during final assembly
• Rear wing alignment issues
• How paint thickness can affect final fitment
One of the biggest discoveries was how strongly fluorescent orange is affected by the undercoat.
Over a dark undercoat, the color can change dramatically, while a white base gives a much brighter result.
I also tested Mr. Color fluorescent orange, and in my build I saw very little color bleeding through the white decals after clear coating.
The finished model is far from perfect.
The body did not fit as cleanly as I wanted, and the rear wing was slightly misaligned.
But instead of hiding those problems, I decided to leave them in the video.
If you are planning to build the Tamiya 1/24 Mazda 787B, I hope this video helps you avoid some of the mistakes I made.
I definitely want to build another 787B someday and try again.
