Before Texas was Texas, Comanches and various Apache tribes had already been fighting for over a century for horses, territory, trade routes, and control of the Great Plains.

In 1839, Lipan Apache warriors advanced alongside Texas Rangers to attack a Comanche encampment. But to understand how two former enemies ended up fighting alongside Texans, we must go back more than 130 years.

From the arrival of the Comanches on the southern plains to the destruction of San Sabá, the Spanish expedition of Ortiz Parrilla, the Battle of Sierra Blanca, and the shifting alliances between Apaches, Comanches, Spain, Mexico, and Texas, this is the story of a rivalry that transformed the West long before the great American expansion.

In this documentary, you'll discover how the horse shifted the balance of power on the plains, why some Apache groups sought Spanish aid, how Spain ultimately made a pact with the Comanches, and why a battle in 1787 was recorded in an extraordinary pictograph drawn by a Comanche warrior.

Do you think Spain was right to rely on the Comanches to fight the Apaches? Let me know in the comments.
