No joke, I actually recorded all these songs directly from the game (the music plays even when you pause the game) back in 1996 when I was 12 years old. My stereo system was hooked up in a way that I could record audio from the tv directly onto cassette tapes (which I utlized A LOT back then since there was no internet to find all the songs I liked but were never played on the radio). 2 years later one of my friends showed me that putting the game disc in your cd player gave you the soundtrack already, lol.
People who where born in later generations cannot understand it...
When this game came out, NOTHING came ever so close as to give this sensation of Thrill, Speed and Adrenaline.
Racing games before that where Meh at best, but THIS, THIS, was the starting point for a new generation of racing game that where actually Fast & Furious.
When the fastest thing you ever saw as a racing game as a Kid was F-Zero and Mario Kart, then suddenly you test this badboy on the PS1 Demo Disc..., its like receiving a Kick in the Nuts while chewing 15 mints and sucking in all the air you can...
This generation of console gaming truly was game changing in so many ways. As an older millennial born in the mid 80s... knowledge of gaming up to this point was the 8bit and 16-bit eras, before digital/stereo quality music was used in console games. Now we had The Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method, and other electronica in racing games... It was next level. Console gaming had become something new altogether. Moving into exciting territories that would define the future.
The game that got me into Graphic Design. I already knew Designers Republic from their Pop Will Eat Itself work but this one really left an impression.
The PC version of this had all these tracks on there as normal CD tracks so you could stick it in any CD player and away you went. Cracking soundtrack and the design of everything still looks futuristic 25 years on.
One of the coolest games series ever conceived, with the slickest soundtracks and the hardest learning curve because you needed lightning reflexes to be good at it. The slightest fuckup left you half a lap behind so total concentration was required, like, in the fucking zone. And you got to shoot the crap out of the other racers. What’s not to love? Gotta say tho when it shat the bed and a grav motor malfunction had you heading into low orbit, it was pretty funny 😄
