This key opens many locks... | The Great Loop on a Shanty Boat

Back Waters and Back Roads

Howdy! Fellow adventurers. In this episode of "The Great Loop on a Shanty Boat" Wavey and I go deeper and further west, through the Erie Canal. We pass through several locks...all a little different. One of the locks was almost at flood stage due to excessive rain. You can't get in a hurry in the Erie Canal, it's meant to be done slow and easy.

My wife and I are originally from Michigan and we're both military veterans so we've been around a few States with the Amish. We now live in Kentucky and we have to say the Amish here are the absolutely nicest people to be around. They have no problem with you coming over to their house doing stuff with them. I go fishing with them. It's always a fun time.

My wife will be retiring in 6 years and in 6 years I would like to have a shanny boat built so we can hit the river and have our retirement on the water. I have watched just about your whole complete series and you have an awesome setup. Thanks for the videos. I enjoy every one of them.

The Adirondack Power and Light Building stopped producing power in 1950 and has been used as a storage building since then.

I live 10 miles from the treasured Erie Canal. I came from FREE or Die New Hampshire . People there thought I was crazy to come to high tax NYS 26 years ago. I don't mind paying taxes because I get to enjoy what you described about staying along the canal and dozens of other benefits. As a retiree I am in pig heaven. There are dozens of historic and culturally exciting towns all along the canal, to say nothing of expansive agriculture, farm fresh produce and meat and great ice cream and cakes and pies. Come back and enjoy it when you can take your time on land.

At the turn of the last century, the work was often miserable and pollution was an accepted part of business. However, the engineering was incredible. These buildings really were temples to industry, just incredibly beautiful at the same time as well being innovative in construction.

My guess the tree probably has anthracnose. Harmless to the tree. A natural defense when the tree gets stressed from too much or not enough water, too much or not enough sun. It’s a type of fungus. Next year it will be fine.
I learned this from a Master Arborist when I had some oak trees that looked very similar to that one. My neighbor was insistent that I cut the trees down because in his mind it was oak wilt, which it wasn’t. Trees are still there today happy and healthy as ever.

I was camping in Herkimer Ny and my family took the tour boat through lock 18. One thing I learned, when the canal was first built they generated their own power. The building on the lower side of the lock was a small hydro power plant used to generate power for the lock motors.

I have lived right in the middle of the Amish Mennonite community for seven years. It’s been great most are very thoughtful and friendly but yes some keep to themselves. I understand and it’s okay for the most part I enjoy interacting with them. I shop at the Mennonite grocery and buy from the Amish buggies. I support the greenhouses and benefits and auction for the school. I love farms and they are very clean and well kept. The food is amazing pecan pie especially yummy 😋 homemade maple syrup and jam. The locks you were going through today were very interesting thanks for sharing! 😊

Word of warning to anyone traveling on the Erie canal. While there are many bays and inlets along the way, most will have sudden sporadic sandbars that are not routinely dredged like the main canals so if you draft over three feet, I suggest you stay on the straight and narrow main canal. Exceptions do exist in places like the finger lakes and waterways leading to Lake Ontario.

Wow! Too cool. Many thanks for bringing us along!

Those lock walls and dams have to survive some pretty harsh winters . No surprise they’re beat up

I'm especially liking your passage through the locks. Of the boats which passed you, the best boat name was Assisted Living, and the woman on its stern also gave you the nicest wave that I saw. It was nice to see that you were given a nice AGM battery for your new/lighter build.
