EXTRA VID NOTES

1. Just want to clarify I don't think we need an exact replica of Deviantart. Deviantart is very much a website of it's time and it ain't coming back. I just think it would be nice to be another mainstream art website where most artists from all over the internet can hang out together with their fans, when they need a break from the video grind that is social media. Like actually have fun sharing our art and not be punished for it by the algorithm.

Being a digital artist nowadays, you are forced to use social media even if you don't wanna cause it's the only way to grow. I personally only have enough willpower to interact with two to three sites a day. Even pros I follows usually have a hire whose only job is to use these sites on their behalf because we all know how mentally draining it is to be out there

I love Cara, it makes me actually feel lake 12 likes is a compliment

Also the community is so wholesome

For clarity, a lot of sites now require a log in to see the images because it wards against AI scraping.  While it is not fool proof, it does make it harder for scrapers to get in and get the images.

I agree it is annoying to have to log in and very much wish we didn't have to, but that is /why/ some sites are requiring it

I don't think they're failing. I think the vibe is just different, kinda like how early Deviant art was. artists who are used to the twitter,  blue sky or instagram grind of fighting with the algorithm doesn't exist on these other platforms and sort of have to get used to the idea that these other platforms aren't like that. they're more forgiving when you decide to suddenly piss off and hibernate for a week to a few minths. we need to normalise going off and getting inspired and coming back when we feel like it.

I'm a traditional artist. so many platforms will ONLY take digital artists. I'm limited to choice in one way but also I don't have the competition that others might on more inclusive ones. I have been around since early deviant art and I'm absolutely loving a return to the chiller vibe that isn't all about the grift of trying to sell my soul to get an audience who'll never buy anything off me. I love interactions and I get that on Cara while every other platform for me is dead. so I don't really agree that these platforms are struggling or not doing well, it's just different.

Pixiv and Tumblr are my current favorite websites to browse/post art. I love their tagging systems and I haven’t had a bad experience on either, community wise.

The main downside is they both allow AI. I rarely run into unfiltered AI works on those sites (especially Tumblr) but it really depends on the fandoms and interests you follow. More niche fandoms unlikely to have AI arts.

i was trying to think about how like the ultimate artist platform would be and then i realized i was just inventing amino again in my head

I love cara. It's nice to have a website I can link my grandma that doesn't ask for a login. I agree it could use some color though, its a bit unpolished looking. It also ran terribly on my phone last time I tried. I think their vibe is professional, so maybe parring up with stock pose creators could be a good direction. Like a social media gumroad.

I just got Cara and I mostly did it, so I could have a site I could link to where all my art is in one place, so people can get a quick overview.

People are VERY much in favor of two things over just about anything else: conveniance and comfort. Sure theres horrible features about these mainstream social media sites that make them basicly hostile to anyone who isnt driving up engagement all the tim and SURE the people inhabiting them are some of the most horrible people you could come across on the internet. But thats really not going to convince many people to up and leave. They want to wake up, click on the app or website and keep scrolling and liking posts endlessly until they get bored. Its nearly impossible to get people to drop these habits and make the effort to leave for greener pastures.

I think the many of us simply believe a better world isn't possible and just settle for less.

I'm just waiting and hoping desperately for the day someone makes a site called Shmeviant Shmart and it looks pretty much like late-2000s deviantart but it's juuust different enough to not get sued. Like maybe make it purple lol.

You are insanely well articulated. And you make cute art. Instant sub

I'm a girl that uses newground a lot. It's the closest thing to Deviantart. We need more art websites for both artists and non. Deviantart knew what they were doing in the past. I think new website follow normie social medias without innovation. Add communities for interaction and sharing work like deviantart or even something like amino maybe even allow live streams like Instagram.

I'm using Cara and I know I wouldn't mind some ads or subscriber tiers there. I'm already subscribed with monthly coffee. Running a website is expensive. I wish more of the userbase understood this.

Teezr and ArtDen are two other new ones building up.

so we need a new gen deviant art

If a website did the art thing and had pretty avatars I bet it could take off. Gaia and tinier me were super popular, especially if you add a feature where people make and sell clothes (maybe after vetting so its not drowing in amature work)

Hey thanks so much for making this video some of these sites I was unaware of.  I think people are to much creatures of habit and are very hesitant to try new hangout spots. I remember when the online world was more about 'surfing the web' where you would be going to new and interesting sites you heard about. It be nice to see of that return and I think these new art sites are helping in fostering curiosity.

I miss the old days of Deviantart so much. Made so many great friends there and was able to sell my art, despite not having insane skills or doing 50 backflips on top of a rolling ball to push my content.
