Boulder, Utah still got its mail by mule for part of every year until June of 1940. The road that replaced the mule is Utah State Route 12, and it gets into town along the top of a sandstone ridge called the Hogback, with no shoulder, no guardrail and a drop on both sides. The builders had already tried two other roads to Boulder, and snow shut both of them every winter.
