The trick to have the best of the best: Play OPR ruleset in the 40k universe. Best of both worlds.

@chuckmeriam9930 1 year ago

I went from 40k to OPR and will never go back. The faster pace, sensible rules, and model agnostic setup of OPR is so perfect for my preferred casual wargaming. Also, paper miniatures (printouts with simple stands) are a great, super cheap way to play too.

@Afterimagedan 1 year ago

OPR, while is seems casual, actually has a significant amount of built in strategy required in their alternating activation system. The free digital rules is massive. I am personally a big OPR guy.

another great thing with OPR is you can play your sci-fi army against a mates fantasy army

me and a mate got into OPR, made a few home rules and left out what we didn't like in the advanced rules. we're nearly at the end of a custom campaign using Warhammer lore which has been class :)

OPR is the best that have happened for the wargaming hobby specially in the 3d printing era.

I really enjoy OPR, because I can reuse my old Warzone minis. I even wrote a community army book for them .

Regarding accessibility; with OPR you won't really need to worry about items going out of stock and being scalped because GW only made a limited number of sets. If physical models (from OPR) go out of stock, they will be restocked again and available. If you want to invest as little as $300US for a small resin printer and the stuff you need to go along with it then stock will never be an issue. OPR even provides paper minis if you want. Where I am at, it is harder to find games, but I just see that as an opportunity to introduce new players. Also you have options for solo and coop play.

I'm thinking of getting into the hobby, I don't think I'll do tournaments, I'm mostly there for the collecting and painting... Now after some quick math, buying entire OPR armies (if I don't just get the 2 per month you get on their patreon) + buying a 3D printer + the resin/filament cost less than a 1k points 40k army, my choice is made for me

Big fan of the work one page rules does, the unified products and army forge are awesome

@Xexanos 1 year ago

I am slowly getting more and more of my friends into OPR. It's really good for a casual game, especially if people haven't heavily bought into 40k already rules wise (books, codices). It's also really nice that they can just use their existing 40k minis to play OPR and that a free army builder exists.

Also I have a friend who has played 40k for ages but is really interested in the OPR models, especially those that don't really have a good equivalent in 40k (Saurians, Eternal Dynasties). So he kinda has to play OPR with me :D

The thing people either don't realize or don't talk about is how similar opr is to the old WH40K 3rd, 4th, and 5th editions, which are by far the best 40k versions GW have come up with.

@franciscopina2899 1 year ago

2:43 one thing to clarify about the point systems: they don't translate 1 to 1. The point cost of the models in Grimdark Future is quite higher than in 40K (a little bit over double, IIRC), so a standard 2000 pts game of 40K would translate to roughly 4000 pts on Grimdark Future.

@BandagesMinis 1 year ago

I love OPR and your work in promoting it has been fantastic!

@Toqtamish129 1 year ago

OPR has a ton of depth. Could play it for years and be fine.

@andrewdavies6355 1 year ago

Also worth noting that OPR doesn’t charge Aussie/NZ-tax Unlike GW who hike prices ridiculously in our end of the world. Yesterday I bought 48 Wargames Atlantic dudes as Cadian proxies for the cost of 10 GW ones.

@MasterRanger71 1 year ago

OPR had me at you-go-I-go.

@MrDysturbed 2 months ago (edited)

The mostly online part of this is changing as the starter sets and expansions for that starter set. Have started showing up at LGS's. Reasonably priced too.

@donjuandon 1 year ago

When official OPR STLs + a resin printing setup is still cheaper than 40k the cost is a no-brainer.

@ironthewed 1 year ago

I haven't played much of OPR, but I have enjoyed the games I have played to the point that I don't think I am ever buying another 40k product.

I built my Eldar Corsairs and have almost 2500 points worth of Harlequins. Now they are in a single thematic army that I never have to worry about being discontinued, because I built the army list on their army builder!

Everything I want.
