Of course you took a pay cut. You don't need the money because on TOP of your salary you'll get retire funds,  holiday money, way cheaper health care, almost free education for any kids you might have. Europe is just more value for money...so you need less. And since you get a 40 hour workweek and 30 paid days off...you might actually have a higher hourly wage.
But please continue learn Dutch, because it makes things so much easier for yourself.

Your "beetje Nederlands" is already 1000x better than my British colleague who has been living here for the past 25 years.

I'm German and have been living in the Netherlands for over 25 years. When I first came here I lived in Amsterdam and found it hard to learn and speak Dutch because in every group at work or in a private setting, at every party there were non-Dutch speaking people so everyone had to speak English. Even in the shops in Amsterdam  nowadays you sometimes don't get by with Dutch because the shop assistants don't speak the language. I think it's a shame. I only started to learn more and better Dutch when I moved to Limburg in the south.

I try to speak Dutch during social talks with non-Dutch colleagues. In this way they get the opportunity to learn Dutch. Otherwise they keep trapped in their English language bubble.

i was a mechanic in america and when i was was able to finally work in the netherlands it takes me only about 1 month to find a job here they need people working with their hands and there are many more like me who do not speak dutch coming from eastern europe to work here.

Legally, from those six weeks vacation, you are required to take at least two weeks worth of paid time off in one go, to ensure you do relax properly! Loved your Dutch btw! Perfect!

Makes a big difference when you can do your job in a bit more relaxed way and not worry about stress like sudden layoffs, demanded overtime, available 24/7, begging for a day off only to see it cancelled the day before your holiday. Way better work-Life balance now. Enjoy.

as Dutch native, I was employed with USA and Swiss companies in Switzerland, I speak English+German as I left School, and learned Swiss German language when I was employed with an American company, we had 14 months salary, 4 weeks holiday, great to be in Switzerland. You are doing great, just learn Dutch your benefit is that many Dutch speak English and like to do that, so no problem to take your time learning Dutch. Stay healthy, don´t eat too mutch "bitterballen-croquetten-Patatje oorlog" 😵‍💫

Het is het beste om nederlands te leren, nederlands is de voertaal hier, nederlands, duits en engels waren trouwens 1000 jaar terug dezelfde taal, veel succes

Worked at some big internationals for over 7 tears and the main language was always English. They had the same "rule" in that we were supposed to speak English at the work floor. However, I do think that even understanding a bit of Dutch goes a long way. You don't necessarily have to speak it but if you can pick up some Dutch here and there that will give you a advantage. Good luck in your endeavors and I really appreciated the long-form content!

And yes, the long interview processes can be really annoying - but when I find myself getting frustrated by it, I try to view it as the price we pay for not having the at-will employment og the US.
Then it suddenly doesn’t seem too bad - and a small price to pay, lol😜

I guess, learning the language would definitly open up a lot more possibilities. Not just for a job, but to get connected anyway. Its super cool that they accomodate you with speaking english everywhere but you are still the outlier.
