DEADLIEST Luftwaffe Aces of World War II - Forgotten History

FORGOTTEN HISTORY

Meet the four Luftwaffe fighter pilots whose combined aerial victories reshaped the air war over Europe and North Africa during World War II.
Who were the most successful fighter pilots of the Luftwaffe, and what made them so deadly in aerial combat?
In this Forgotten History compilation, we examine the lives, tactics, victories, and legacies of four of Germany's most famous World War II fighter aces: Hans-Joachim Marseille, Adolf Galland, Walter Nowotny, and Erich Hartmann.
From the scorching skies of North Africa to the brutal Eastern Front and the desperate defense of Germany, these men became legends in aviation history. Some were brilliant tacticians, others gifted marksmen, and all flew in one of history's most destructive conflicts.
This documentary explores:
• Hans-Joachim Marseille – The "Star of Africa"
• Adolf Galland – Fighter ace and commander
• Walter Nowotny – Pioneer of the Me 262 jet fighter
• Erich Hartmann – The highest-scoring fighter ace in history
Using historical sources, photographs, maps, and battlefield analysis, Forgotten History separates fact from legend while examining the men behind the victory counts. If you enjoy military history, World War II documentaries, aviation history, fighter aircraft, Luftwaffe history, the Eastern Front, the North African Campaign, and untold stories from history, subscribe for new episodes every week.

Great video as always! I was a little sad to see Hans-Ulrich Rudel missing from your essay. Some might be surprised to learn that Rudel had 9 aerial victories to his name, despite flying a Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka" dive bomber for nearly all of his 2,530 missions. He was shot down or forced to land 30 times and was wounded five times by flak, but never by enemy pilots!
I hope you make a video about him one day, very interesting character. Helped with development of the A-10 Warthog, as he was a ground attack specialist.
The rest of his resume includes: 519 tanks destroyed, 1 battleship (Marat), 1 cruiser, 1 destroyer, and 70 landing craft sunk, 800+ vehicles, 150 artillery/anti-aircraft positions, and 4 armored trains destroye, all on the Eastern Front. The only recipient of the Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds!

If you look at the way the Russians treated their own people, it's amazing any Germans made it home at all.

Great collection of stories, Colin. Adolf Galland came over here to an airshow my uncle went to. He said Galland was a very polite and a courteous man. He answered any questions asked of him.
Not surprised about Goring. In WW1 he was handed the command of Manfred von Richthofen's squadron after his death. I read many thought he didn't earn or deserve the promotion. Probably politics even back then.
Someone asked about you doing a story on panzer aces.
Everyone knows about Piepmeyer and Wittman. How about one on Otto Carius? I recommend you check out his book. "Tigers in the Mud" was published by Stackpole publishing. It's an interesting read, and you can include how he lived after the war, another story in itself.
Thank you for the interesting and informative video, Colin! 👍🇺🇸
