That might now be my all time favorite quote: Reporter: “When you’re selecting your ballads and standards it’s basically on the basis of whether it turns you on?”

Bill Evans: “Yes, you know if I was going to go that way (what the audience wants) I would already be a millionaire.  You know I would have certainly been intelligent enough to have analyzed a lot of formulas and would have been a rich man today.  But you know, I just play what I like… and that’s the way it goes. “

It's so funny, that in all this social media, listening and watching Bill Evans talk is the only time I actually feel like I'm listening to a normal human being.

1980, close death. I take his initials, and music as spiritual advice. BE

God bless you Bill Evans. The greatest of all time.

Bill Evans was the sensitive Chopin an impressionist in Piano-Jazz.

I was a newborn baby during this interview. It’s nice to know there was a brief 3 months when we both existed on this Earth together.

Every now and then i come back to this video just to listen to Bill’s voice.

Evans was one of the few jazz musicians that could articulate what he felt. Who could articulate what we (the audience) felt as well. So important to have someone like him who was so sensitive and aware with the tools to convey those feelings.

Sadly the New York he is describing does not exist anymore. I lived there in the 80's and what hit me was the diversity and tolerance of all peoples like he said. But today unless you make $200,000 a year you are considered sh**>also not many Bill Evans's walking around today.Sad. But you could be yourself there  at one time.which was nice.

Hard to believe, but true, that Bill was a functioning but heavy drug user most of his career, right up until the end. Heroin then coke. He doesn't ever seem to exhibit the type of behavior you would associate with such a lifestyle. Maybe that is irrelevant. Bill was a musical genius and will be remembered long after we are all gone and forgotten.

When he said “I like New York” I was expecting him to say “in June how about you?

Bill Evan’s is the genius behind the giants . He has untouchable depth of feeling in his music that hits me my core. I am melancholy often enough and he speaks directly to me. I love him

This is special & rare

what a gift this is

One of the greatest videos on youtube

Yes, really nice to have this personal glimpse of a massive genius.

Especially revealing, his critique of his days with Miles, despite the slights, both were the better for the collaboration....

Loved listening to this, it felt like we were just hanging out and sitting in that car with Bill as he opened-up and went about his errands! So interesting and insightful, no need to apologize for the sound quality, what a genuinely great find , thank you for posting.

Bill Evans was not only a musical genius but he was incredibly articulate  when he spoke.
