The fact that no other English king has ever been referred to as "The Great" tells you are amazing this Alfred guy was.

I can’t believe how he didn’t mention Alfred’s right hand man. The infamous Uhtred Of bebbanburg!

Alfred was a badass.

His children were pretty awesome in their own right as well.

The "Great Heathen Army" must be the most badass name for an invading force ever

With the construction of the burghs, Alfred pioneered what Muhammad Ali would, many centuries later, call his "Rope-a-dope Strategy". Letting your opponent wear themselves out attacking impenetrable defenses, as the Danes were neither inclined toward nor adept at laying long, protracted sieges to and then storming fortified defensive structures. The burghs were a stroke of both tactical and strategic genius. As Sun Tzu would have said (and approved of), Alfred truly understood his enemy.

I’m surprised you didn’t talk about his health. Alfred’s chronicler kept detailed records of him including appearance and health which is why we have a pretty good idea of what he looked like.

He also detailed many of Alfred’s symptoms, that he suffered in his life so well modern scientists and historians believe he had Crohns Disease

Alfred is my all-time favorite historical figure. I love learning about him and the time period in which he lived. Truly one of the great men.

YES! One of the Greatest English Kings finally got his video! Let's keep the greatness rolling and do Constantine the Great next. The Founder of Constantinople and Savior of Christianity!

After playing Assassins creed Valhalla I was curious to see how history truly remembers Alfred.

Damn Batman's butler has a hell of a background story.

1:20 - Chapter 1 - Enter the viking age
3:45 - Chapter 2 - Rise to the throne
7:05 - Mid roll ads
8:25 - Chapter 3 - The viking scourge overwhelms england
11:55 - Chapter 4 - Alfred vs guthrum
16:30 - Chapter 5 - Visions of a united england

Thanks to my recent Ancestry DNA test, I found out that Alfred is my 44th-great grandfather. Now I find myself binging everything I can about him.

So “Hvitserk” getting baptized by Alfred ( in Vikings show ) and being renamed Athelstan was actually Guthrum’s  story

Ok now please do one on Ethelred the Unready and how he got his Monty Python-esque name

Interestingly, Alfred left Athelney with his army at Easter. There’s a theory that he did this on purpose, intentionally drawing on Christ parallels, to contrast himself against the heathen Vikings.

The English aren't stingy with The Great title mate, it's just high standards 😅.

“The vikings were startled but would soon be back and in greater numbers “  😎

I love that Simon’s writers can troll him by sneaking obscure Star Wars quotes into scripts. 11:42

Anyone else here after listening to Hacks From the Past podcast?? Alfred's story is so inspiring!
