Fire agate has the rolling rainbow fire of precious opal — and it's one of the rarest gems on Earth, found in only three desert regions on the planet: Arizona, southern California, and central Mexico. But it hides its fire inside dull brown pebbles, so finding it is only half the skill. This guide covers what the raw botryoidal chalcedony looks like, the loupe-and-water field test to spot hidden fire, where to search a site, the free BLM rockhound areas where you can legally dig it (Black Hills near Safford and the Duncan area, plus Saddle Mountain and the private/pay-dig reality at Deer Creek), and the hardest part — carefully grinding away the brown skin to reveal the fire without grinding straight through it and destroying it forever.

⚠️ This is desert collecting — bring far more water than you think, check land status and mining claims before you dig, and note that the low desert is an October–April season.
