Glacier Peak Climb - Washington State

Glacier Peak, otherwise known as Dakobed and Takobia by Native Americans, is the fourth tallest mountain in Washington and the second most dangerous. It has produced some of the largest and most explosive eruptions in the history of the Pacific Northwest. Of all the large stratovolcanoes, Glacier Peak is the most isolated. Most climbers require several days to reach its summit. We were fortunate during our mid-July trek and climbed through the clouds at 8000’ to be greeted with bright sunshine and a view that made you feel on top of the world. The awesome experience of climbing Glacier Peak is hard to describe in words, and something we will cherish the rest of our lives. We hope this video gives you a window into this world.

I used to go up to the mountains before i got hurt

Wow! At the top I was looking for a crater like the one that exists on top of Rainier (Glacier did last erupt 13,100 years ago…not that long ago) but there was only snow to be seen. Is there one underneath somewhere, do you think? That first musical selection sounded amazing! I’m always excited when I see a new posting on your channel. They are always well-presented.

A better musical background for this GLACIER PEAK video might be to use some of the splendid music composed by Alan Hovhaness, his HYMN TO GLACIER PEAK. Premiered by the Seattle Youth Symphony in 1992 it remains one of several works that this composer created as tribute to the various mountains of the world that meant so much to him. Although Hovhaness‘ HYMN is a bit longer than this video a judicious arrangement of its moments would enhance this video immeasurably, IMO. Hovhaness‘ widow also claimed that they could actually see some of GLACIER PEAK from their home outside Seattle.

How necessary was roping up in your opinion, and how many crevasses did you see along the way? How likely do you think the risk of weak snow bridges would be in early July?
