Children are taken into care so the state can protect them. But Newsnight has heard from children who were taken into care and then placed in a home where they say they were desperate for food and two say they weren't even provided with a duvet.

They were living in so called “supported accommodation” – a type of unregulated home.

In our latest report on Britain’s Hidden Children’s Homes our social affairs editor, Katie Razzall, investigates one home run by a company that was paid huge sums to look after those children.

Newsnight is the BBC's flagship news and current affairs TV programme - with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.

This is a horrible way to "care" for teenagers 😰 How is dumping a kid in a house with other kids, with no help, no hope, and not even seeing to their basic needs.. how is that anything short of abandonment? They can be bullied or assaulted by other kids or strangers.. this is nothing short of criminal 😠

This what happens when social services and looking after most vulnerable is out sourced to private companies

“This is one of our fleet vehicles we use to provide services to our vulnerable children” his explanations are insults.

How is this possible!!! 22,000 pounds! And those starving over 16's would be living on £40.00 as 'benefit scroungers'!!!!!
DISGUSTING!

Nice car I bet with all money that's being raked in poor kids

For this amount of money, I cannot believe they couldn't find honest reliable people to manage these homes! Why can't families or couples apply to run foster homes of a few kids, monitored by social workers? These numbers are shocking, no wonder it attracts the wrong type of people if it's handed out unchecked!

This is one of the times kids are growing fastest and they need food.

Ridiculous! They should have to provide a set list of provisions for the money they charge. There should be set meals & snacks provided, set items they have to provide for each child & the household, set hours that staff have to spend with each child & group of children, set areas of guidence & tuition that staff should have to cover. There should be regulations & inspections. Surprise inspections, more than once a year. Interviews where children are asked what has been provided for them & if they need anything.

These children, lets be clear, are budgeting £44.00 a week.

Imagine the difference if councils simply put them in a flat and paid them £200.00 a week. Winner all round, I'd say!

such services should not be outsourced to private companies in the first place. Profit and welfare don't go together.

SHAME on those grifters living off taxes - to not even FEED them and have the 'staff' cook in front of them AND deny them food. What despicable excuses for people ... TYSM for advocating for children!!!
