I have the Harley Benton Red Special. The bare bones is the guitar ar good quality. It has that Strat style 5 way blade switch and 3 phase switches. Unfortunately the pickups are wired in parallel instead of series, and they sound awful out of phase. I’ll be modding all that. I replaced the tuners, nut and saddles; as well as leveled crowned and polished the frets. It’s a very good guitar now, on its way to becoming great when it’s wired properly.
I've studied the wiring diagram for those guitars from Temu or AliExpress. If you open it up, you'll see that each switch has individual capacitors for each pickup. That means they aren't out-of-phase switches. They're just tone switches for each pickup, as you thought.
Wait, what?!!!?! You knew Cheetah?!?! Cool story and beautiful guitar. Dead boys and the projects of the other members such as lords of the new church are big faves of mine
I have a Temu Red Special model too. Mine doesn’t have a zero fret but that’s okay. I’ve upgraded mine with silver unmarked knobs, a higher quality bridge, a different backplate and I’ve put Optima Gold 9-42 electric guitar strings on it. For a while, I couldn’t figure out how to get his tone but after I put it with my Fulltone OCD pedal, I am glad to pick up my Temu Brian May Red Special.
You scored a Red Special actually in red, It definitely looks the part and you got a double nut too!😄 Looking forward to hearing it again once you've got it set up.🎸🤙🤙
It would be interesting to see how close one of these Temu specials could get to the official BMG budget model with a bit of work.
Like you said the nut needs work, probably needs rewiring so the the phase switching is doing what it should. My main concern would be the pickups, on the BMG model the stock pickups were one of the first things I swapped out along with the pots as they weren’t great.
I dread to think what pickups they are sticking in these Temu versions. 😁
