You opened GIMP instead of Photoshop, it looked nothing like Photoshop, and you closed it forever. Most free apps don't replace one Adobe app, they replace pieces of it, and picking the wrong piece keeps you paying about sixty dollars a month. Here's exactly which free app replaces which paid one, and which two to pair together.
đź“š What you'll learn:
Why GIMP only covers half of what Photoshop does, what version three finally brought in 2025, and why smart objects don't survive opening a Photoshop file
How Krita replaces Photoshop's painting side plus Clip Studio Paint and Corel Painter, with brush stabilizers, seamless texture wraparound and a built-in animation timeline
Why Inkscape's SVG files scale from a favicon to a billboard but can get bounced by a print shop without native CMYK, and how Scribus fixes that with CMYK, spot colors, ICC profiles and PDF/X export
Why editing photos in GIMP only works for one photo, and how Darktable replaces Lightroom for a shoot of four hundred raw files if you learn just five modules
How Blender replaces Autodesk Maya at about $1,875 a year, why its game engine was removed in version 2.80, and how 'Flow', made entirely in Blender, won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature
How Kdenlive and Shotcut share the same MLT framework, why Kdenlive's proxy clips aren't optional, and why Shotcut opens the file everything else chokes on but starts on a nearly empty screen
Why OpenShot is the gentlest on-ramp for your first edited video, how Blender quietly powers its animated 3D titles, and when its stuttering playback means it's time to graduate
How Audacity went from Carnegie Mellon in May 2000 to Muse Group in 2021, and the truth about the telemetry backlash that spawned forks like Tenacity
