real-life habits that quietly drain your money: https://youtu.be/p9iLjt9hcKA

"A lot of our clutter is not functional, it's aspirational". So spot on!

Having the reality check for who we wish we were vs who we really are. Priceless,  but the hardest part!

Unfinished Decisions are the Problem. Never were truer words spoken 🤔

1.  Stop storing things where they 'should' go (1:22): Instead of forcing a small space to hold too much, only keep items actively in use there and relocate the rest based on the space's actual limits.
2.  Contain by time, not just by category (3:56): Assign time boundaries (like 72 hours) to transitional clutter on surfaces (like the kitchen island) to force decisions on mail, returns, and projects.
3.  Make the right thing easier than the wrong thing (6:40): Identify your home's 'desire paths' (where clutter naturally accumulates, like a chair) and redesign the setup to make putting items away easier than leaving them out.
4.  Stop saving space for your best self (9:11): Declutter aspirational items—hobbies you don't do, clothes that don't fit your current life, or entertaining gear you don't use—to make space for your real self.
5.  Reset small and often, not big and rarely (10:30): Rely on small daily or weekly maintenance routines rather than waiting for massive, infrequent cleaning sessions.

Menopause made my life feel cluttered inside and out 😩 brain fog, low motivation, emotional swings. I thought I just needed better routines. I tried productivity hacks but still felt overwhelmed and exhausted. Nothing addressed the root. Then in a menopause group someone mentioned the Menopause Transition Playbook by Lisa Grant. I followed it and 30 lbs gone, clearer head, steady energy. Mental clutter lifted too.

Unfinished decisions. YES!  This is very helpful to hear.

OMG, “the chair”…the floor, the couch, the stairs, the treadmill, the spare beds, I am DOOMED!  😳

I have ADHD and have struggled with “organization” my entire life. I was never taught how to declutter, nor that it was necessary.

I have a “too much stuff” problem. I take one bag of recycling, garbage, or donations out of my apartment every day. I am finally seeing results, it is an achievable goal, and it does not overwhelm me.

At 51, I finally hit the point where I cannot keep living like this, because clutter/mess is so stressful.

Great points - thanks! We have to stop calling stuff "clutter". It has negative connotations and makes stuff the "enemy". These things are our possessions, for good or for worse. When we first bought the item, it had value, and somewhere along the line, it became negative, it became "clutter". It's still your possession, it's the value which changed. Second, an island should not be a dumping ground for stuff. It is a preparation area or somewhere to sit and eat or work if need be. When mine is not in "use", it has a bowl of fruit on it (so it doesn't look bare) and that's it, and it's a massive island. Then I don't need to clear it to make space for the job it needs to do. Third, I worked in retail ops, training and visual merchandising for years. People had trouble maintaining standards and keeping their stores looking great. I used to instill in them, that if you can put something down wrong, you can put something down right. Do it right the first time and save yourselves a ton of time. Also, it just looks better. People think they don't have enough time. So close your eyes for what you think is two minutes, no silent counting. Most people open their eyes in under 30-40 seconds and are amazed how long two minutes really is and you can do so much more than you think in the time you have. Next, a friend of mine who was an architect, told me years and years ago that people don't buy bigger houses to enjoy more space. They buy bigger houses to store more stuff. Houses become massive "at home storage containers". And what happens when it fills up? They buy a bigger house. Also, when you buy "organisers", you think it's a verb instead of noun. An "organiser" isn't going to do the work for you. That's up to you. An "organiser" is just another thing. It's like a church. If the church stands empty, is it a church? No! When it has a congregation, then it becomes a church. Same for a school, or a hospital. People make things happen, not things. Finally, when you dump your possessions, like clothes and shoes and mail and groceries, that's laziness. People need to grow up and take responsibility for their possessions, their "stuff", and cherish it. If you don't, then get rid of it.

Your haircut looks amazing on you. Cute bob.

Spot on, all my life there has been” a chair”!

This is the best advice ever! Watch a lot of videos about decluttering, and yours is the only one that has talked about the habits in the way that you have. It’s just fantastic! Thank you.

"Unfinished decisions"!!! Thank you! You're seriously one of the BEST!!!

Thank you for explaining "problem small homes" so well.  It's critical to create workable routines for one's "real self" so tasks are managed and momentum is maintained.

I need to create a domestic braindump "to-do list" so I can set myself as least one daily task.  The satisfaction of blitzing through bite-sized tasks should  lighten one's mental load.

In the past year I've also stopped looking around (my place is 700 sq ft) and wondering what storage-centric thing I could add... and I started letting go of more. And now in the past few months I've been decluttering many of the bins/baskets and other storage things. True freedom!

The bedroom chair... I always needed to hear a realistic interpretation about it!

This women is brilliant!

Loved this video. I don’t have storage systems I only have a trash basket in every room and no one in my household wants me to make a diecion because they already know the answer. Sorry we live in a small home and I refuse to take care of grown children and other adults. I am handicapped and I do all the cleaning if it gets overwhelming I will get rid of it. Simple solution.

Perfect.  I need to listen again and jot down anew reminders ❤
