Rust Never Sleeps came out when I was around 18 years old. I had heard the song Comes A Time on the radio and was interested in that voice mostly. Then I heard Powderfinger and my mind was blown. Wait, I thought, how could that be the same guy singing both songs? A country sounding song and a hard rock song. I had just gotten a job and saved up to buy my first stereo system. I dropped some coin on it and the first album I bought was Rust Never Sleeps. Then Comes A Time. I was again blown away when I heard the music through my stereo system. It was a revelation. Prior to that, I had only listened to music on cheap transistor radios. I was a Neil Young fan ever since. He started my musical journey through the past where I discovered the Beatles, the Stones, the Band, etc. amassing quite the record collection.

"Rust Never Sleeps" was my introduction to Neil somewhere in the mid to late eighties when I was getting into playing guitar as a young fellow.  What an education!  The lyricism and delicate beauty of side one balanced with the stomp-your-head into the ground rock of side two showed me that there was more to playing music than what was on radio and MTV at the time.  To this day, "Powderfinger" is still in my classic rock band's setlist and I get to sing it and play the solos.  It never gets old or fades away!

"Twenty songs in the top five". Sounds about right for a lot of acts i like, and especially Neil Young.

I loved this retrospective! It’s one of the best so far. You seem to have a way of combining all the relevant information as well as include funny anecdotes and interesting observations together with very eloquent conclusions. After hearing the last conclusion in this video I can’t wait for the next one that’s going to be about the 80s! Keep it up! 👍

Another fantastic retrospective on a classic album. This was about the time I really go into Shakey. Didn't see him live until the Americana tour, but he brought back the oversized Fenders.

Rust Never Sleeps Live was a huge part of my trips out west with my daughter back in the 80s. So much so that she told me, "If I have to fear Sugar Mountain one more time..." LOL Powder Finger blew me away......literally. I never got to hear Thrasher until years later. Epic! I'm off to see it after this is over.

That's great! One of the greatest albums and concert movies in the history of rock! Very powerful both lyrically and musically. Acoustic songs like Thrasher, with a perfect guitar and harmonica parts and lyrics about friends from the past. Pocahontas very emotional song, Neil has always been known for his special sensitivity to native americans. Electric side - it's just what blows you away. Powderfinger - what a lyrics! It's hits me every time when i listen to it. A story about guy who died fighting for his home. And musically it's basically country song, but it's sounds like hard rock. It always been one of Neil's things, doing some country hard rock songs. The music in this song perfectly recreates the image of what is sung in the lyrics. Neil is a great storyteller. And guitar player! Yeah, he maybe not really good technically as a guitarist, but what he is playing just sink into your soul. You can play a million notes a second and sounds feelingless. And you can play one note solo, but get into people's souls. To me that's what is rock and roll is all about. Anyone can play this music. It's not about techniques, it's about feelings, emotions and playing from your heart. That's what Neil is doing. And i think that's why punk rock emerged in the 70's, just to revive this rock and roll essence. Welfare Mothers and Sedan Delivery are just straight up punk rock! Neil is one of few rockers who accept punk rock positively (the other few i can remember are Paul McCartney and John Lennon). Hey Hey My My - just perfect, to me the line "the king is gone but he's not forgotten, this is the story of a Johnny Rotten" is about how one rock and roll generation replaces with the new one. Sure, Crazy Horse band is very powerful and making really strong rhythm. Neil Young and Crazy Horse are definitely one of my favorite rock bands of all time! I remember reading letter from Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney to Neil Young. Paul said that they like his Live Rust album and they can't stop listen to this album and side four just kicks ass. Also i found out about your channel from your cover of Live Rust! I like it a lot! Thanks you very much! Rock And Roll Will Never Die!

I saw on a poster that Dolly Parton opened for Neil on the tour. Amazing. I really enjoy your videos!

You’re doing a great job on these man. Keep it up. Always look forward to these videos.

I remember when this album came out... I was in my last year of high school and my first band, a punk rock outfit.  We rehearsed at the house of some "older" (mid 20s) hippies.  They got this album right when it came out and were playing it constantly.  Now here we are 45 years later and I'm just now coming to the conclusion about the momentous level of genius this work represents.

I enjoyed this video very much thanks! Btw on your statement of Live Rust being Neil's first solo double album his soundtrack album to  "Journey through the Past"  came out on double vinyl in 1972.

Brilliant, as usual... 😁

great  NEIL

Thanks man!

Enjoyed the retrospective. Good stuff!👍

First became aware of Young in late 79. Back when Capital Radio was a rock radio station, late night either Nicky Horne or Alan Freeman would go all out. About 20 minutes was life changing, live version of Like a Hurricane played, followed by some live Nils Lofgren. So at 15 years old, rushed out the next day bought Rust Never Sleeps & a couple of days later Live Rust. The film Live Rust back in the day did not appear on general release & obviously pre internet was tough to see anywhere, but my mate, who had also become a Young fan, found that for 1 week it was being shown at the Screen on the Green in Isligton, at the time,  a bit of a treck across town & obviously done on a school night. Both albums led me hunting through Young's back catalogue, but those 2 albums are probably still my favourites. The tracks still randomly pop up on my playlist in the car & after packing in my main career just over 10 years ago, finding that there was other things in life & that I didn't have a hobby, got asked to support my daughter on stage playing guitar.... rather oddly as I didn't play guitar, but for some reason within a week pulled it off, then realised that when noodling around all the Live Rust songs just fell out of the guitar. That led down the next rabbit hole..... buying lots of guitars, well lots by my wife's standards & I have tried to edit down to keep at around 10ish, strangely Les Pauls, 335s & few accoustics. 45 years later, playing those tracks from the Rust albums is just as much of a buzz as hearing them on vinyl for the first time. Thanks Neil. Always a Journey Through the Past.

great content!

Rust Never Sleeps album  was extraordinary the best, Dearing late 70s and early  80s star wars and LSD was on the table  purple microddot mickey mouse lemon  drop acid every  one was tripping when Niel Young Movie  came out  in the theaters in 3D  the elements were fantastic tripping on LSD was magnificent.  Rock  and punk music industry  was draw dropping. Hollywood  was on a fantastic  cocaine  high   descelebrating with a beautiful  sweat LA would never be the same. At this time Neil was delivering  true music  going through  big changes  in his life. Neil is  a leader not a follower,  lyrics says it all space mountains  stars  and Indians wearing his clothes.  Appreciate  all you do Rust For Glory your band is brilliant .
