In March 2016, a Go match between a human and artificial intelligence took place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul. The proposal came a few months earlier, on the day Lee Sedol 9-dan was returning from the finals held in China, where he had lost 2-3. Usually, players who lose major matches are given time to prepare, but on that day, he was contacted immediately. The name of the opponent he faced, after even signing a non-disclosure agreement, was AlphaGo. However, he regarded this as a mere event. This was because he judged that while chess had already been conquered by computers and Go would eventually follow suit, there was still time left. He believed that machines could not match his intuition and sense, and he had never once considered the possibility of conceding the entire series.

Even after losing the first game, his confidence remained. It was the second game that shattered him. What was harder to endure than the loss itself was the fact that he could not explain to himself why he had lost. He says that even when he tried to review the games, there was no one to share the experience with, and that time felt like talking to a wall all by himself. That night, acquaintances gathered in his room, and as if starting from scratch, the discussion continued until around five in the morning. He entered the third game with a prepared strategy. His calculation was to bet on the game early on, as fewer stones mean more possibilities, but even that did not work. It is said that only after losing three games in a row did he realize that this was not just his own defeat.

Then the fourth game began. He did nothing in the early stages, avoided combat, and steered the game concisely. Passing the 68th move, it reached the 78th. Faced with that single move—which penetrated a spot the AI ​​had not predicted and created a rift—AlphaGo eventually threw in the towel. He single-handedly created a path that no one else had thought of or even suggested. Now, ten years later, Lee Sedol 9-dan personally retraces those five games.
