One flattened cardboard box laid over a garden bed can keep that bed almost weed free for a season, and the reason has nothing to do with killing anything.
Most small weed seeds are photoblastic, meaning they need a flash of light before they will germinate, so a solid sheet of brown corrugated board works like a blackout curtain over the seed bank sitting in the top inch of soil. The video explains that mechanism, shows exactly where the method fails (the seam between two pieces, which is why the overlap has to be six to eight inches), covers how to cut an X to plant through the board, and then explains the second thing the box is doing: feeding earthworms that pull the carbon down and rebuild the bed while it sits under the sheet.
