What Happened to Africa After Slavery Ended?

Everyone learns about 1807, the year Britain abolished the slave trade.

But that was not the end of slavery in Africa.

Ships continued to sail. The trade continued in different forms. In some African states, slavery expanded even as it was being dismantled elsewhere. And within a century, almost the entire continent had come under European colonial rule.

So what happened in between?

This is the story of the long transition that followed the end of the Atlantic slave trade, when trade became influence, influence became control, and control became conquest.

It is a story of African rulers trying to adapt, merchants building new fortunes, missionaries crossing the continent, European powers expanding their reach, and Africans resisting a world that was changing around them.

⏱️ CHAPTERS

Prologue: The Ships Were Leaving
Chapter 1: When the Old System Broke
Chapter 2: The World That Came After
Chapter 3: When Influence Became Power

From Samuel Crowther's journey from slavery to becoming Africa's first Anglican bishop, to the rise of King Gezo of Dahomey and Jaja of Opobo's struggle against European interference...

From the decisions made at the Berlin Conference to the battlefield at Adwa, where Ethiopian forces defeated an invading Italian army...

This is not a story of Africans simply watching history happen to them.

It is a story of African rulers, merchants, soldiers, communities and resistance movements making choices, adapting to change, fighting for their interests, and sometimes paying a heavy price for those choices.

Because the end of the slave trade did not mean the end of Europe's ambitions in Africa.

It was the beginning of another chapter.

If you discovered part of this history for the first time, that's exactly why African Unveiled Legacy exists: to explore the African history that helped shape the modern world.
