History teaches us about kings, empires, and conquests. But the real architecture of power — the system underneath all of that — was built long before any of them. In the river delta of what is now southern Iraq, between 5500 and 3800 BC, a culture called the Ubaid quietly invented the machinery that every civilisation since has run on.
Centralised storage. Specialist labour. Administrative seals. Elite households that looked like ordinary homes. Temples that functioned as banks. A class of workers paid in mass-produced bowls.
None of it looked like power. That was the point.
