Sounds like we need to understand the culture in order to understand the art.

Me watching this after just finishing Brothers Karamazov as my first Russian classic 👁️👄👁️

Absolutely blown away, by your analyses , the flow of language, rivetting presentation and fabulous insights. Intoxicating !

You’re amazing. I’m a Russian language student and absolutely enjoy your videos. 🤍

I like the idea that the authors were having a conversation with each other. I wouldn't have thought about it like that, but it makes sense. Thank you for the helpful video! :)

This is the perfect channel for me. I just started reading Dostoyevsky, Tolstoi and Anton Chekhov a year ago (White Nights & Ivan Ilyich, in a german translation) and my next Russian read will most likely be a novel from Turgenev before I dedicate some time to War & Peace.

Great video, super informative! I’m sure I’ll be using it as a North Star to guide me through one of the richest literary traditions, beyond excited ❤️

I’ve only read Dostoevsky and Chekhov. Looks like I have other books to read!

Very informative and thought-provoking. Greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for this video, I'm just starting to read about russian literature and this was extremely helpful ❤

Just discovered your channel, love it! Please never stop talking about Russian literature. I am deep in Dostoyevsky and this adds so much.

Goncharov's Oblomov is my hero, but I can't be bothered to say why

Outstanding video, Olga, thank you. First time the algo served me your channel, immediately subscribed. I earnestly encourage you to do the Silver Age video too, please!
Back in my teens I read some of the Gold Age classics. This video has taught me I merely consumed them. I'm bringing them all back into my reading list!
Nowadays I'm mostly reading sci-fi, and would love for you to also do a video about that genre (I'd love your recommendations to balance out all the anglo-scifi I'm exposed to).

Thankyou! Would love a video on the silver age as well ❤

I’m always intrigued by the fact that in Crime and Punishment, Dostoyevsky included the murder of the pawnbroker’s sister, as if he was thinking that his readers would have thought that killing the pawnbroker was justifiable, so he had to introduce a crime against an inarguably innocent person.

Great video. I have read tons of Russian literature and some in Russian, and thought I knew a fair bit but I learned a lot and enjoyed every minute. Subscribed.

Very helpful discussion.  I like the  idea that the authors are having a conversation with each other and each is taking ideas and presenting them in different ways.  Lastly. I appreciate the concept that they are putting a reality to the ideas.  What happens if. ...Thank you for giving me a new framework to look at and  evaluate Russian literarure.

More familiar with Eastern European games, but they also have this very grim and gritty outlook on the world. I find it refreshing, coming from the Western European view, where it's more romantic. Not that we don't have books that ain't dark or gritty, but the tone level can be very romantic in some media vs the more realistic view that I have taken away from various games over the years.

I began reading Mikhail Bulgakov around last year, because I heard he was a good place to start from a friend who mentioned The Master and Margarita, but the first book I read of his was A Country Doctor's Notebook and that one gave me such flashbacks to one my favorite character from the video game Pathologic where one of the main character is clearly very Bulgakov written in the way he goes about.

My favorite game media right now are Metro 2033, Stalker, Pathologic, and The Witcher. All of them bring very different themes to a large table that my brain is stuffing itself on.
But also it truly thanks to my friend over in Russia, that I took more interest in way we talk about media and how different the experience is when you come from more romantic vs a realistic view on the world,

Good job!  Thank you.

Hello and thank you for a very helpful discussion! I;ve just finished rereading  Crime and Punishment and it is one of my favorite novels. Your tips are valuable and encouraging,

This was my first of your videos, thanks so much for this!  Subscribed.😊. I’ve only read a couple of Russian novels (Crime and Punishment and Anna Karenina) which I enjoyed a lot and I have a collection of Chekov stories which I tried to read a few yrs ago and had trouble getting through.  Thanks so much for these guiding questions, I look forward to checking out your other videos!
