Vinny turning into a late night tv host but for weird and interesting things is my favorite thing in the past few sunday streams

"i swear i'm not 100 years old, chat" the "40" year old man says with his smooth 25 year old looking face

Animators: look, I made the dinosaur dance. Ain't that whacky?
Also animators: I will spend the next 30 years on this one proyect and would rather DIE than make this on twos.

Thief and the Cobbler is so trippy, shame Richard Williams couldn’t complete it within his own vision

I love these "learning with Vinny" segments.

The thing about Gertie is that it was revolutionary for animation.

Winsor McCay, the animator, was a vaudeville performer and he would actually screen the short and act like he was actually interacting with Gertie, hence the cue cards added for context where he asks Gertie to raise her feet and then feeds her a pumpkin, with Walt Disney himself producing a filmed recreation of the act as a form of preservation out of respect for McCay.

It's also so old it predates cel animation, every frame you see was individually drawn on paper, hence why the backgrounds and a characters are constantly "shaking," because McCay and his assistant had to painstakingly draw the backgrounds and characters at the same time for literal thousands of frames.

Gertie herself was notable for having something that resembled a personality, which was unheard of at the time, and her design and character animation were extremely detailed and realistic for the time as you can see by some of the small subtleties in her actions.

In 1994 it ranked at #6 on Jerry Beck's "The 50 Greatest Cartoons" as selected by 1000 animation professionals.

it's really insane how disney was built off public domain stories and taking "inspiration" and they fight the hardest to make sure no one else dares to do that to them

These "weird world" segments have been some of my favorites, and this might be one of the best ones. In an age where the suits are actively trying to remove any and all humanity from animation and the arts in general in favor of machine-made slop, and the general public is sadly apathetic to it, seeing all of the blood and sweat that artists put into their craft that they themselves know may never be seen or appreciated on any significant scale, is more important than ever.

Superman.

So strong, he can crush a box of cigarettes with his bare hand.

Man I'd give my left Melpert up to see Vinny watch Bulgarian Treasure Planet in it's entirety.

Hopefully YouTube doesn’t try to take this down.

So glad that this segment saw the light of day! :) I was there for the whole thing in chat, it was great to see how much everyone was enjoying the pack. There is a bottomless well of this type of animation out there in the world, so I would be more than happy to put together another compilation sometime in the future!

Awesome segment. I think one of the craziest parts of Thief and the Cobbler isn't just Williams working on it for 30 years, but him having to maintain the same art/animation style for 30 years to keep the characters looking consistent from scene to scene. Same for King and the Mockingbird. If there's something about a character's design you want to change some 20 years in, well you should have thought about it 20 years ago lol

Just the idea of committing to a creative project for longer than I've been alive is bananas by itself, but they were also in an era where you couldn't just post it to Youtube for the public to freely view it at any time. It's a level of dedication to a craft beyond my comprehension.

There seems to be a pretty fine line between "providing contextual information" and "Vinny reads my essay to chat" and we haven't quite perfected the formula yet.

Cool stuff, and my reminder to watch Neo Tokyo

If you look at the shot where the sorcerer dude (thief and the cobbler) does his card trick, and scrub through it frame by frame, you can track each individual card as they go from one hand to the other. Each card in that 52 card deck was properly tracked and animated.

I love weird and obscure animation history and I've easily seen most of the stuff here, Vinny should really be given a pack of Soviet animation as well like "Hedgehog in the Fog" and "Contact" to watch because it's just so wild. Massive respect to whoever made the pack for picking out a lot of my favourites here, adding in Shinel' (the Overcoat)? 10/10 choice

Facts: Before he went on to become an animator for Gertie the Dinosaur and The Flying House, Windsor McCay also worked on comic strips such as Little Nemo in Slumberland and Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, which the latter got a film adaptation made by Edwin Staton Porter. The Little Nemo comics are highly worth checking out if Vinny makes another "weird art" segment, especially how trippy and experimental the comics are.

@IamSpacedad 1 year ago

This isn't quite 'weird and obscure' though there are some examples. A lot of these are major landmark staples of animation history, such as UPA's Rooty Toot Toot. As an animator: Thanks for doing this by the way. Please do more animation focused stuff like this.

12:06 Fun Fact: this was the accepted idea for a while (mostly because it helped for the war effort), but it was later found out that the Uboat only fired once. The second explosion was actually the hot boilers exploding from the sudden colder ocean water.
