Additional Information (from the Ministry of the Environment website)
Two bridges span the moat leading from the Imperial Palace Plaza through the main gate to the palace. The bridge in the foreground is the "Main Gate Stone Bridge," and the bridge in the background is the "Main Gate Iron Bridge."

While "Nijubashi" (Double Bridge) generally refers to both bridges collectively, strictly speaking, it refers to the bridge in the background. The bridge in the background was formerly called "Shimojōbashi" (Lower Bridge), and was named this because it had a double structure with a platform in the middle to support the bridge girders. The current bridge was rebuilt in June 1964. These bridges are not normally used, but are used for official court events such as the New Year's public greetings and visits to the Imperial Palace by foreign dignitaries.
