In Latvia, the parliament has decided to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention, the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women. This move has triggered a highly charged debate in Latvian society which includes attitudes towards women, pits conservatives against progressives, and highlights the fear of Russian influence in the Baltic state.

2:31 I don't speak Latvian but I think
Konsultācijas ir bezmaksas means that the consultation is free (Bez is without, similar to Slavic languages, and maksa is payment, similar to Estonian) - not that there's no waiting list

The narrator showed quite some creativity to pronounce President's last name Rinkēvičs as Rinkeviks.
And it perplexes me why do foreigners always pronounce Latvian words with emphasis on second syllable - it is always on first syllable just like Estonian and Finnish, very simple.

It was funny to hear this "traditional" Latvian couple going on about God and the Bible, because this part of Europe was some of the latest to convert to Christianity only in the Middle Ages. Let's be honest, Latvian tradition has very little to do with Christianity.

Talking about "real Latvian values" when they're christian and not pagan LMAO. Talking about society while living way out on a farm with their kids that they don't socialize at school LMAO

18:48 If her future husband ends up gradually developing an abusive streak, she'll be afraid to call it out because she'll always feel as though she had failed her father for not calling it out earlier.

How, in the 21st Century, are we still going backwards on womens' rights???? God Almighty, what is wrong with people???? All power to Latvian women in their struggle for decency and justice, a struggle they should never have had to fight. (from an Anglo white old man).

It seems misogyny is rampant across the West, not just America.

Pure propoganda btw, convention does so little to protect womens rights, our own constitution does it significantly better. What the constitution actualy does or promotes is gay marrige, transgender rights and so forth, thats why we want it gone in our country.

Women have voting rights but do not have to defend the nation in case of war. In peace time men in Latvia have to give up 1 year of their life to defence forces. There is no equality

You have to be absolutely dum and blind not to see and understand that these protests are inspired by Russia. Otherwise, how can we explain the fact that protests for women's rights are taking place in the Baltic region, the safest region for women in Europe? More violence against women is committed in a single day in France or Netherlands, than in the Baltics in a month.

If the REAL issue truly is protection of women remove the parts of article 4(3) that are from gender activists "“The implementation of the provisions of this Convention… shall be secured without discrimination on any ground such as sex, GENDER, race, color, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, association with a national minority, property, birth, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENDER IDENTITY, age, state of health, disability, marital status, migrant or refugee status, or other status.”

GENDER IDENTITY is explicitly listed as a protected characteristic.

States must apply all protections (shelters, policing, prosecution, support services) equally to TRANS and NON-BINARY PEOPLE.
