Gerard Way is a fuckin genius honestly, he actually studied cartooning and wanted to work in the comic book industry but was inspired to start MCR after witnessing the events of 9/11 (there’s a whole domino effect and iceberg about this too you should check it out).

some fans argue that MCR’s first two albums are actually connected by lore too, those being I Brought You My Bullets and Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge where the Demolition Lovers were introduced in the debut album, and some say the concept followed to Three Cheers as well where it’s about a man who makes a deal with a Devil to kill one thousand evil souls so that he can be reunited with his lover (i won’t spoil the whole thing, if you ever check Three Cheers out i highly recommend reading up on the lore too, imo the album as a whole is on par with TBP)

during the making of TBP (i think) Gerard was actually still working on his own separate comic series, The Umbrella Academy (yeah, that one) which released a year after TBP. he’s also responsible for the character Peni Parker in the Spiderverse movies

And btw yes, "Teenagers" is based in a real moment. Gerard Way talked, in past interviews, of how the made up stories to tell real things... like in the Killjoys album, there is a song about a certain summer touring with his (now) wife's band... but the song still serves the storyline. The dude write about Death, vampires, zombies, a giant robot god... but all that are really talking about him and his life. He rarely talk about real life directly. Even here, cancer is probably a metaphor for his troubles with depression and addiction... those things that eat your life up like a cancer. Every songs have a real life meaning and a story meaning.

I appreciate your thoughtfulness and comprehension of the vision here!  When MCR became popular I was a new mom and really set (long established) in my taste in music and dismissed them as pop-punk/throw away/stuff for kids.  I'm so glad I heard Foundations of Decay years later on the radio (the day it was released) because I recognized the depth of the story telling and the outstanding musicianship instantly which I decided was permission to check them out further.  I'm so bummed that it took me so long to give them a chance.  This album is my favorite...most days.  Some days my favorite is Danger Days (their last full album) which is NOTHING like this one.  Alot of experimental sound and genre-fusion...controversial to lots of the fans with the strong post-hardcore roots but it feels like home to me with my "club-kid" new-wave/dark-wave/post-punk roots.  Keep going with them please!  I feel like the stuff you didn't like before, you might hear it differently now with a different understanding. I can’t believe I’ve JUST now realized the screaming in Sleep was legible as “wake up”, I mean I don’t listen to TBP as much as their Sophomore and Senior Albums but MAN does it just add THAT much more impact.

I have something to add about Mama.  I could be mistaken , but I think it is very beloved in part because it is one of MCR's most dynamic songs performed live.  It is an absolute SPECTICAL on stage in any era.  In the current tour, the live strings (cello and violin), opera singer, and the additional interlude and "dagger" section elevates it even beyond the sheer loud-ness and pyrotechnics. I HIGHLY suggest checking out a live performance of Mama (Mexico City 2/13/26 is one of my favorites).

I love Gerard Way story telling style because it's really open to different interpretations. This is one. I've heard many others. Gerard's writing is chaotic (the fact that he switches characters POV frequently is also present in the previous album's narative) and not base on logic but rather on feelings, impressions... Here is a different interpretation (mine): in my opinion, The Black Parade is out of chronological order, yes, but simply because what human would recollect their live in order? My ADHD brain loves this organic story telling where what and when is not that important...  😅 It's like in the movie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" ; memories are connected to each other by emotions, by places, people, smells... and try to have a clear timeline is counter productive in my opinion (although I do love listening other's theories out there). Gerard's comics, from the ones I've read so far, are not really "neat" story wise; it's messy. I personally like that! The worlds he creates feel lived in and so rich, the characters feel alive, but the stories are all over the place... but I kind of think it's because the storylines are just excuses for the characters to evolve and I'm fine with that. To me, he writing always feel like poems; sometimes, the sounds of that collection of words and the emotional response it gives you are what's matters... some poetry is more logical and figurative, some is strange and impressionistic. I've always imagined this specific album as the Patient drifting in and out of consciousness, with Death patiently (🙃) guiding him on the road to the afterlife. I like to think he is dying for good at the end (some see it as he survive the cancer) but his drifting on this road let him the time to revisit and reconcile with his life, the time to stop being afraid of living (because it also mean acceptance of dying one day), which finally allowed him to truly lived... even if it was only for few days or hours. 🖤❤️‍🩹🖤 There is no true or correct reading to this album story because art is a story that keeps behind rewritten: Gerard wrote his version of the story, then the band used it to rewrote a version with their music, and every people listening now write the final version; their version. The magic of good art!
