Brian Shaffer was a 27-year-old medical student who disappeared without a trace on the night of April 1, 2006, in Columbus, Ohio. He was last seen entering a bar called the Ugly Tuna Saloona with friends but there’s no footage of him ever leaving. Despite an extensive investigation, no one has seen or heard from him since, and what happened that night remains one of the most baffling missing person cases in the U.S.

Imagine being Brian's brother, Derek... his mother died of cancer, then his brother disappeared, and finally his dad died in an accident... he lost his whole family in the span of a year or so... 😔

“Ugly Tuna Saloona” “Sloppy Donkey” what a town!

I remember a story of a grocery store worker who dissappeared in the store, he was found 10 years later when they removed the old freezers. He was wedged under one. It was his hiding spot when he wanted to take a break and he fell head first and hit his head.

Your particular style is very suited to this case. I don’t think people can understand the odd layout of the bar without visuals.

As a college student, I am pretty convinced that he just wanted to go to another party or something else after the Ugly Tuna Saloona, avoided his original friend group as he assumed they would try to dissuade him from continuing to party, and managed to cross paths with the wrong person at the wrong place and time.

You, ABSTRACT, and LEMMINO scratch a very specific "genuinely mysterious situations that are actually mysteries and not fake ghost story bs" and/or "genuinely strange true crime stories that are worth discussing for the raw historical significance and don't sensationalize or disrespect victims by turning their tragedy into entertainment" itch and I'm grateful for all y'all for doing what you do.

Concerning the detective's opinion about the difficult hall - never underestimate the ability of drunk folks to get into places deemed difficult. There was a woman who ended up getting stuck in an air vent on top of a steak house in ATX.

The dumpster theory is pretty solid, honestly. As gross as it sounds, heavily intoxicated people make strange choices and it's easy to find confirmed cases of accidental deaths that played out just this way.

Finally, a true crime channel that warns about polygraphs. The only people who like polygraphs are law enforcement personnel.

“Brian had a history of disappearing without explanation” and he doesn’t seem mentally stable… - he either completely ran away or disappeared for a few days and ran into trouble.

I was a freshman there when this happened. There are a lot of drunk kids that end up in predicaments. But we never would’ve thought this would be unsolved 20yrs later.

Finally, a video that's not afraid of giving us an answer to what they believe happened in this baffling case. I'm low-key sick of all the videos covering this incident giving us no theories on what most likely occurred.

Imagine if Brian managed to disappear on his own and is now living somewhere and is watching this video right now, with a new name.

Whether it was foul play, self-harm, or something else (the long-shot chance of a deliberate disappearance), my hunch is that him not being captured on camera leaving the bar is a bit of a red herring. It was a strip mall bar in Ohio, not Fort Knox or the White House. He probably just dipped out a side or back door. If this was a mystery novel, that not getting caught on film would certainly be crucial (otherwise why would the author include it?) but real life doesn't operate by the rules of dramatic storytelling.

I’d like to point out that drunk men falling into bodies of water while taking a piss and dying has been a common thing since records in the Middle Ages. Men fall into canals so much in Amsterdam that areas around the city with a lot of bars have ropes in the canal so people can hang on to them if they fall (they were specifically installed for drunk men though). There is no smiley face killer. Drunk men pissing are just prone to falling in water and a smiley face is one of the most common things to draw on something.

I have watched likely dozens of videos on this case now. Yours provides the most comprehensive coverage and context, including theories and speculations that have not been mentioned in other videos.

That's by far the most sober and rational explanation for this case I've heard yet. Excellent job.

The fact he was last seen at 1:55AM and his phone was turned off at 2:01AM is interesting

@lesleymaner2851 4 months ago (edited)

At 1:59 am Brian was last seen walking off cctv camera. At 2:00am Clint and Meredith were seen going down the escalator. At 2:01 Meredith calls Brian’s phone which goes straight to voicemail. She leaves a message asking where he was and that they were leaving.

So in two minutes Brian was gone and his phone turned off.
