The 'Daeho Kim Jong-seo,' the third ship of the South Korean Navy's next-generation Aegis destroyer fleet, was launched today in Ulsan. Equipped with the capability to not only detect but also intercept ballistic missiles, this vessel will increase the Navy's Aegis destroyer fleet to a total of six once it becomes operational by the end of next year. Reporter Kim Ar-nae reports.
[Report]
A massive hull appears in the waters off Ulsan.
This is the Navy's third next-generation Aegis destroyer, the 'Daeho Kim Jong-seo.'
It was named after the pen name and given name of General Kim Jong-seo, who led the expansion of the northern territories during the early Joseon Dynasty.
The Daeho Kim Jong-seo is an 8,200-ton class vessel measuring 170 meters in length and 21 meters in width.
It can sail at a maximum speed of 55 kilometers per hour and is equipped with an integrated sonar system and a ballistic missile countermeasure system developed using domestic technology. While the existing Sejong the Great-class Aegis destroyers focused on detecting and tracking ballistic missiles, the Daeho Kim Jong-seo is capable of performing missile interception missions as well.
[President Lee Jae-myung: "Because our defense industry capabilities have filled in this plan piece by piece, this ship can go out to sea and protect our seas."]
The Daeho Kim Jong-seo is scheduled to undergo sea trials and be delivered to the Navy next December.
Once full operational readiness is complete, the Navy will operate a total of six Aegis destroyers: three Sejong the Great-class and three Jeongjo the Great-class.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries designed and built five of these ships; notably, all three Jeongjo the Great-class Aegis destroyers were constructed at the Ulsan Shipyard.
With the launch of the Daeho Kim Jong-seo, all three of the South Korean Navy's next-generation Aegis destroyers have now taken shape.
