What Donald Trump feared most has happened: Barack Obama has fully entered the midterm election campaign. Just weeks before the polls, Obama is recording videos, endorsing Democratic candidates, warning donors that everything is "on a knife's edge," and acknowledging that states like Texas, Kansas, and Nebraska are swing states. And the polls are clear: Obama's support gains votes, while every time Trump opens his mouth, it loses them.

And what is Mr. Orange doing in the meantime? Calling Vladimir Putin to ask for diesel. After failing in his war with Iran, with the Strait of Hormuz closed and diesel prices at record highs in the United States, Trump is boasting about an agreement with Russia, the same country that, according to his own military, was helping Iran. He breaks his own sanctions three weeks after imposing them, leaves Zelensky looking betrayed, and then thanks Putin publicly. Imagine if Obama had done this.

In this video, I explain why these two images—Obama on the campaign trail and Trump pleading for help from Moscow—portray a desperate president and an empire that is running out of gas, almost literally.
