As far as the Greeks are concerned, there are two races: Greeks and everyone else.

I am a Greek in the diaspora (Canada).  I worked for a company that sold a product from Austria.
The Austrian factory was closed for ONE MONTH during December and ONE MONTH during August.
People had ALOT of vacation time in Austria.  We had to plan our availability around those times far in advance.

God bless them for doing that.  In Canada people have no life, no soul.  
What you do for a living is extra important because it becomes your personality.  Because you're THAT BORING.

If Greece's economy was in a better place no one would be giving side eye over the month of August.  People are still supposed to enjoy life, economically challenged or not.
I'm glad my Austrian supplier shut their factory down for two whole months for their employees, and I'm glad Greece slows down during August.

Imagine being so inadequate that so much of your wretched life revolves around work....that all you have to offer others in the way of conversation is what your boss said last week.  Ick.

You talk to a Greek, you talk philosophy, history, truth, politics, your deepest emotions.  
This has happened during too many random cab drives for me to not understand it is more than coincidence.  If this is the level of convo you are having with a total stranger, imagine what it is with someone you might know.  

Greeks feel deeply, they express deeply, they live deeply.
I don't give two shits about what their contemporary situation is right now.  Greece is better than many other places on this planet, including those in a comfortable fiscal position.  It is a matter of what is important to a person.  Superficial people won't get it; spineless people won't get it; the rest, will.

Regarding apprehension towards other races, keep in mind that Greece has an almost 100% white population that was exposed to other races only in recent decades. It is natural for people to be apprehensive about something they are not accustomed to. However the large majority will get over their initial apprehension once they get yo know you and their natural tendency towards xenia will kick in.

I attended an all girls school so I know about woman gossiping, when  in Greece I am reminded of this time!  We accidently overheard a family friend totally roasting someone from Athens!  

As for rasism, the young people dont care, as for the old grannies I have learnt to look through them, no acknowledgement at all. My husband taught me this.

Something I recently learned while applying for Greek citizenship for my son is the importance of ensuring that your marriage is officially recognized in both countries. If you have not already done so, contact the appropriate embassy or consulate to confirm the requirements. This can make applying for your future children’s citizenship much easier.

Regarding some of the points in the video:

1. Obesity is a major problem in the United States, where unhealthy food is widely available and the average diet is often poor.
2. Greeks do stare, especially in small communities where everyone knows everyone. It is less common in larger cities, but Americans would probably find it surprising! 😂
3. Americans would also find some traditional Greek foods unusual.
4. Greeks work some of the longest hours in the European Union. The problem is not laziness but productivity and the lack of advanced, high-value industries. Two hours spent producing fabric cannot generate the same economic value as two hours spent producing advanced technology such as microchips.
5. You made a good point about household income and family life. However, after living in the United States for 22 years, I believe Greece can provide children with a more well-rounded education. Here in the South, quality private education is extremely expensive.
6. It is not necessarily true that Greek men overwhelmingly prefer Greek women. I grew up on a tourist island, and many of my friends married women from Germany, England, Scandinavia, and elsewhere. My own wife is from Haiti.
7. Polyamorous relationships remain uncommon, even in the United States. Most Americans do not practice this lifestyle and still consider it unusual.
8. I disagree with the idea that most Greeks are racist. A small racist and extremist minority exists, but it is the exception. Most Greeks reject racism, partly because of the country’s experiences during World War II.
9. You also made a good point about credit cards and financial insecurity. According to the Federal Reserve, approximately 37% of Americans could not cover a $400 emergency entirely with cash, savings, or a credit card paid off immediately.

btw the "world" sais that we re lazy cause tourists always watched the local ppl having fun,the strange part is that the hours they saw that(11 morning till noon) its cause they worked from 4 in the morning till around 11-12(farmers and sea ppl),that was the case till a few years back.then we had the "crisis" in greece and all the coffee places were full with young n old unemployed ppl.

One of the things I love about conversations like this is that the questions people are slightly afraid to ask are often the ones that lead to the most interesting conversations. 😊 Being married to a Greek has certainly taught me that what Americans assume about Greece — and what Greeks assume about Americans — can be very different from everyday reality!
