Removing mold on VHS tape using my homemade vhs cleaner.

Emerald Coast Digitizing

I Have made a few videos on how to build this vhs cleaner and now it's time to prove it works! In this video I make a quick improvement to the machine and then clean a tape 3 times. I built this cleaner out of an old rewinder and an old vhs drawer.

Whatever works, right? It's the extraordinary effort you put in to come up with simple but effective things like this that makes you an expert that others look up to. Fantastic job!

Sempre achei que as VHS originais de filmes são bem mais resistentes ao tempo que as regraváveis virgens

Looks more like the tape destroyer, no surface cleaning and handling issues. Oh boy :) There are some excellent resources on cleaning VHS tape, that could guide a much better approach.

Look great and I can see you can do both side of the tape at the same time! Personally I alway do a wet clean first to help cut down the airborn mould and I have a vac to suck it away.

When i was in my teens like most other teens i used to chew the tape reel, or damage it.

What do you use for cleaning solution ?

@daguru87 2 years ago

Once flakes or bits of mould hits the reels of the tape. Thats damage, depending if there was video in the part where the tape reel was damaged, if the whole tape reel is in mould, sadly it may have caused too much damage that it will clog your video heads.

how much to clean a moldy copy of Alien?

@yllawx7536 2 years ago

What about VHS-C ? Same system ?

Amazing videos, I'm just about to build a cleaning machine like yours for a couple of moldy VHS-C from my grandparents. The only things left are finding which DC motor and circuit to use on it, and what can I use to replace those 'Pec Pads' with isopropyl alcohol (maybe standard tissues? or the cloths that come with eyeglasses? Pec Pads are not available in my country and don't know the material's generic name they're made of).
Anyways, do you recommend digitizing VHS-C tapes playing them on the cameras that originally recorded them? Or makes any difference playing them on a VCR with the adapter?

How to clean tapes sir plaesa tell me

@Tomsonic41 2 years ago

It looks like your cleaner is only cleaning the front half of the tape; the part that touches the heads. In my experience, mold can form on both sides of the tape - and the cleaner that Phil uses seems to clean both sides. Maybe you could adapt yours to do the same?
