Many, many thanks for this video. I cleared and repacked my stern gland in about 45 minutes with two experienced boaters watching. Both saying that the boat should be out of the water to be safe. They were amazed at how little water actually came in and everything was completed beautifully. It only took that long because there is not enough room within the propshaft channel to fit a spanner - I had to use a screwdriver and hammer and tap very gently!

Having done hundreds of these repackings for old industrial pumps not narrowboats(although the same process), use the loose part of the stern gland to push the packing in with, it will make sure the packing goes in square, then you only need a screwdriver to make sure the first bit has bottomed out.

Excellent. I won’t have to pay somebody to do it for me because I’ve just watched you do it and explain everything step by step. Good work.

Great video- very helpful! One thing I would add is that while graphite packing is great (use it on my boat) it is one of the most noble metals so you need to maintain/check your zincs on shaft or else the stainless steel shaft will get destroyed quickly by galvanic process (graphite touching stainless in water, especially salt/brackish water).

Used to pack steam valves on war ships in the navy, we had some useless tool called a packing extractor, but after the gland seat had been in a few months and been tightened up a few times the packing was ROCK hard so the old scribber was the tool of choice to get packing out  🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿👍we also used to put a 45 degree angle on the cut packing rather than a butt joint

Really helpful, thank you

Fantastic video best I have seen, thanks for taking the time to do and post.

As i am/was new whit this , Ive bougth a set of 3 corkscrews.. it works. The screw too ofcourse😂

Thanks for the "how to" demonstration. I thought it was the grease that stopped the water.

Very helpful and clear explanation. Thank you. I have my annual RCR engine inspection and service next week.
