Been washing my reels after every saltwater trip with my water hose(city water) for over 20 years no problem.

The green “rust” is oxidized copper from your own pipes, not the chlorine. Hope this clears up your confusion 👍🏽

I’ve been using city water to spray down my equipment for 20 or so years and never have had a problem but I’m also not buying the cheap gear

All good advice. But the green deposits you're referring to is Not chlorine. It's Dissolved calcium & magnesium or more commonly known as "hard water". Chlorine over time, over time, and on IPX5 or less reels can cause some issues. Yet, it's better than leaving the Salt water on/in them. If ya don't have reel cleaner, for God sake rinse your reels off with city water, well water, bottle water or whatever potable water you have.

Living in Hawaii and fishing as long as I remember ,65+ yrs. old, being surrounded by salt water I can attest that washing my spinners and reels with freshwater is necessary. I take apart my spinners and reels for occasional maintenance though the newer ones like the Daiwa BG MQ doesn't really need to be taken apart so I don't. This video as mentioned is made for the absolute beginner fisherman, someone who will go to a Walmart and buy a rod and reel combo and tackle based on how attractive it looks .

Guys.. the distilled water thing is so you have a controlled water source. Water across the state is different, let alone the country or world. Some water wont do anything to harm your reel. Other people's water can be a different story. Its a mechanical fishing device, its meant to be around water. Clean, dry and oil what is needed and call it good. Dirt or dust is far worse.

Unless you have an expensive, fully-sealed reel, mistake #3 requires an automatic full tear-down and service the moment you get home. If you make this mistake more than a couple times, either pay gobs of money for a fully-sealed reel or get a reel that is very quick and easy to fully tear down and service; something like one of the first-generation Penn Spinfisher reels. Important note: ball bearings are not your friend when "wade-fishing" in saltwater using a reel that isn't fully sealed! Immersion requires every last bearing be opened, stripped / cleaned, re-lubed, and closed again. Taking standard metal shields off a bearing is a major PITA, but it's the best way of ensuring all contaminated lube is removed so your reel doesn't freeze up. Got a super-smooth spinning reel with 7 ball bearings and IAR? Save that maintenance monster for a dry day at the lake.

Older cousin taught me to fish in the late 1960s. Usually lakes and streams, sometimes salt. We would always rinse off our gear, wherever we went. Last year, I found my old tackle box with my Penn reel from the era, 722Z. I almost discarded it, but then looked at the price for newer models, and read blurbs about plastic gears, etc. I took the old reel apart to clean and lube and but for some dust and old scratches, it was in perfect condition. Well made devices have become so expensive, in my opinion, that it’s criminal, and certainly stupid, to skip simple and easy things like rinsing after use.

I spray my reels with city water. But you are also supposed to get your reels serviced every year. I bet most people don’t do that. I do this and my reels work fine. Also every reel is different Van Staals for example are sealed and can be fully submerged with no issue.

I too am left handed like your grandfather. I have fished for over 60 years and cut my teeth on a Zebco 202 ( rod in left hand-crank in right). Graduated to a Daiwa spinning reel in the early 70's (rod in right hand-crank in left). I learned early on to use both comfortably . What bugs me to this day is seeing fly fisherman cast with their right arm then switch to their left to reel in. I fly cast with my right arm but have the fly reel set up with the crank knob on the left side of the reel so I don't have to switch hands. Seeing folks use a spinning reel upside down causes me to give them plenty of space. I won't even comment on the "chlorine water" thing.

We always had anti reverse reels on my grandpa's boat for getting our trolling rigs going. You get a broken back rapala in the water, then you flick the anti reverse switch open. It was just the way we did it on the spinning reels. Not sure if it was right, but grandpa was a he'll of a fisherman.

Ask around the old timers in moss landing and half moon bay if they remember The Old Dog House. They'll tell you Mike knew how to catch fish.
