Correction to my blues! Both French Ultramarine and Winsor Blue (red shade) are warm blues, whereas traditional Winsor Blue is a cool green. My mind had it backwards! Apologies!

Hello Friends! In this video I’m sharing all of the watercolor paints I selected for my new ceramic palette. I put a lot of thought into which colors I thought would serve well for a variety of subjects and moods, as well as ones that are both great for mixing and/or are premixed colors that I love. I also added a good amount of colors that I think anyone creating their own watercolor palette may benefit from having in their collection. Also, I just want to add that I am not a pigment or color professional, and that I don't have all of the information on these paints. These are just colors I've discovered and enjoyed over the years. I hope you find these recommendations helpful, and I would love to know what your must have watercolor recs are! Happy painting!

Rose of ultramarine is the easiest to mix. I mix mine, put it in my pallet, I already have both colors, save money, win/win.
Quinn Red is the perfect color for hibiscus 🌺

I reach for Permanent Orange PO62 all the time, along with Pyrrole Orange PO73 for my favorite Orange colors! 😍

I'm a floral watercolor artist and just found your channel! When your first favorite color was Rose of Ultramarine, "subscribe"!!! That is my favorite and I feel like it doesn't get the love it deserves. 😂

You caught my attention with, Rose of Ultramarine. I also love Undersea Green, also by DS. I am going on 7 months with watercolor at 63 years old. I don’t have the color knowledge you have, but I do know what is very pretty.

This is a lovely mixing palette. I paint a lot of birds and insects and love mixing winsor blue/ aqua green with pyrrol scarlet/ transparent orange to make lively but solid blacks.

DS French Ultramarine is actually a warm blue, not a cool. You probably meant to say that. I LOVE your color choices. These are some of my favorites, as well. And, your scalloped plate makes a gorgeous desk palette! Just stunning! ❤

The way the Rose of Ultramarine separates is DELICIOUS! Wooo Weee! That's super fun. It could basically paint for you all by itself. Hello new best friend. Art supply companies owe Bob Ross a great deal of gratitude. I doubt there would be so many people into art without him. My kid found an old oil paint box at a garage sale, bought it for me, and its loaded with a ton of his tube choices. Im pretty sure Betty from Indianapolis circa 1967 watched him paint.

Love your choices. I prefer gold ochre to yellow ochre. It's more transparent. I love all of DS's granulating colours. You should try bloodstone genuine. It's a very dark purplish brown, like a sepia. It super granulates. It's great for tree barks, rocks, and a lot of other nature subjects. Quin pink (DS) is another great bright pink colour that is not fugitive. I'm sure you would like it. As for greens, I'm sure you would love green apatite genuine. It's a great granulating sap green kind of colour. Terrific for landscapes. Great video. Love your precise painting!

I just asked me that question and came up with similar colors. My wheel needs at least 25 colours. I skipped Rose of UM ,despite I have it. I grapped a few more basical greens instead of the convinience ones (although I have some), I also Love PY150 and Aussi, my reds are similar to yours and with the blues I got much too far, of course PB29, but also some Cobalts, PG50, PB60, 27 and cerulean. At the end I decided for one Gold and one glitter, because I Like to paint greetings cards too. We will see what stays and what will have to Go. Oh, and I dared to leave bunt Sienna behind for red Iron Oxide. And PR233 had to come with me, to tone things down and give it some granulation.

I wholeheartedly agree with so many of your colour choices! The only colour that I have not tried is Jadeite, although it has always piqued my curiosity and I may take the plunge. Thanks for sharing this info.

That ceramic place is a wonder! Your color selection is so nice, and the DS paints are so bright. I really like them. This kind of video is my favorite; I miss YB's videos from a few years ago so much, and they were so similar to this. A lot of artists from that era just left the site, so thank you so much for bringing this content to us! I'm a sucker for honey watercolors due to the creaminess. I love Daniel Smith's textures and colors, but I find them a bit '''harder''' to reactivate compared to Sennelier, Mijello, or even White Nights. Hope to find the inspiration to use them again soon!

I would choose a lot of what you chose, but the ones at the very tippy top of my repurchase list would be:

-Daniel Smith Lunar Blue (number one I reach for)
-WN Indigo (it’s special - unlike other Indigos.)
-DS Sodalite Genuine (unmatched gorgeous granulation)
-Schmincke Cobalt Turquoise (soooo smooth and gorgeous and I find it mixes well)
-DS Amethyst (I am addicted to the sparkle characteristic taken on by any color it’s mixed with. And it makes beautiful shadows)

I reach for all of them again and again.

And like you, I also love:
- Aussie Red Gold
- Nickel Azo Yellow
- Quin Rose
- Buff Titanium
- Cascade Green
