⚠EDIT: For those confused TURN OFF your extended ISO range or even limit it to not go above what you're not confortable with. That's what the thumb refers to! ❤

1:33 High ISO doens't ruin your photo, the lack of light does. Higher ISO simply amplifies the noise that's allready there.

I have always used a lens hood and have them for all my lenses. I never thought much about it, but really experienced the difference when my hood broke while on vacation in Europe. The difference in contrast was very noticeable. The photos with the lens hood were much better.

I like the photo of the sun beaming without the lens hood better

This is a great video on how to evaluate photos, also why portraits it’s so important to capture the focus on the eyes.

I always use a lens hood if only to protect the lens. I don’t put ND filters on my lens as I did years ago so the hood is my protection as well as the reason you mentioned in the video in regards to direct light “hitting” the lens and causing a flair. I have no issue with directing the viewer of my photo by keeping everything else other than the focus of the shot, softer. Shallow depth of field is challenging in some conditions such as bright sunlight. When I short air shows, everything changes but in situations where I can take my time and carefully adjust my focal point and depth of field, I opt for that rather than try to get everything sharp. Great video! It reinforces composition over technical aspects. There is sometimes too much emphasis on getting a perfect technical shot over an interesting one that makes the viewer of the end result explore the shot and follow the direction of the story the way the photographer saw it.

10:24 Very true! I have a technically poor photo, and by poor I mean essentially smeary trash in every way - NOTHING in it is salvageable, BUT as a whole the elements paint a scene of chaos and beauty that fit the circumstances and tell the entire story. It was a photo of the moon coming out from behind some clouds, wind blowing palm trees that were leaning over a pool, all overlooking the ocean at night, hand-held at a slow shutter speed, just before a hurricane was due to arrive in the morning. I would not have taken a second look at it and was embarrassed I even tried without a tripod, but that photo caught the eye of some other patrons of the hotel and the hotel owner and I sold several prints. There was something in the lighting at play that brought drama people related to.

When it comes lens hoods, using them has their purpose and also not using them has their purpose. I also like to play around with diffusion filters so I don’t always want tack sharp images. Sometimes I like that softer glow and you can get some incredible photos if you’re looking for flare and some sort of diffuse look. It’s really all about what image you’re trying to create.

Very interesting - things I never would have thought about - but the lens hood tip is peaking my interest because I shoot outside a lot and never thought about it before. Will be checking it out! Thank you!

Always use a lens hood, especially outdoors.

Your photographs are beautiful. I seldom carry the lens hood with me, because it takes so much space. Even when I flip it back over the lens for storage, it will widen the lens which makes fitting all the components into my bag difficult. I have to be careful at my age with the size of the bag and the weight, of course, but I have learned to shoot without it and it limits me only in certain aspects. So, I wait a few minutes for the light to move. It's not ideal, but it has to work out the best for me. The only lens that will always have a hood is the 70-200mm because it's the one that I rely on the most for both landscape and macro photography. Thank you for this, I fortunately knew about them all, but I think it comes down to the technical sharpness. Canon feels 'softer' than a Nikon or Olympus and I prefer it for the type of work that I do. If I were to concentrate only on portraits and macro photography, I would have to change all my kit and that is too expensive. The richness in the Canon result suits me better.
