The 6 turn surgeon knot is what I use 100% of the time. I’ve been able to haul in 5-6ft sharks and massive rays with no issues. I used to use the FG knot, but I needed something easier to tie while on the kayak in the rough ocean waters and winds
Cool. Yeah I don’t measure with scales, there are several knots that never break and only breaks along the mainline or leader.
I like this knot as it adds some bulk for a stopper bead and running float. I’ve had to sometimes add bulk when running the fg knot to get by with a float not slipping past the fg knot because it’s quite clean.
Secondly, if I had a tuna out 500m and it breaks ‘along the mainline’ then I wouldn’t want a fish towing hundreds of metres of line, in which case I would prefer the knot to pop and tie on a new leader rather than respool.
Ty for dropping this today! I've had your FG knot video in "watch later" for weeks and just had the algorithm suggest a FG knot video from someone new today. Being able to put off learning that thing for a few more months sounds good with my work/stress load right now.
Edit: 20 minutes after posting my comment, and a FG knot short hit my feed from a really big fishing club channel. You, sir, have your finger on the pulse of fishtube.
I'll master the FG knot soon but I just switched to braid with a leader and found myself shitting the bed tying leaders. And when you don't tie them right (lol) the whole leader comes off on a snag not just the tackle
The 4 wrap breaks at the knot because the 4 wrap cuts into the leader material at the front of the knot. The 6 wrap distributes the pressure over a longer distance inside the knot and it isn't cutting into the mono at the entry point. That's why the leader is breaking farther away from the knot.
I tie the fg fast, but with a fly tying background its very easy an no failure but some ppl are knot challenged. I prefer the pr knot as it is stronger but requires a bobbin to tie. I use light lines but for shark and other heavy lines no need . Hell even an overhand knot with 50%strength is strong enough.
It's the knot I use 90% of the time. But I use a 4 wrap. Reason being is I use 30lb or higher braid except on my bfs rods, and 20lb - 30lb leaders. It doesn't break on fish, never has failed me once. But if I get a snag, I want that connection to break before the braid amputates my fingers.
My first day using a 4 turn I caught a 8.3 LMB on 15lb braid to 12lb flouro, I never tried the fg again. It's all Ive used for 3yrs now, but I will add a 5th when I'm on em.
I Thought the FG Knot Was the BEST — Now I’m Not So Sure
