90 robots, 4,000 dairy cows, and almost 50 liters per cow per day. We step inside Agrícola Ancali, in Chile, the world's largest robotic dairy farm.
Ancali didn't buy a robotic milking system: they designed their own. They call it AMS, Ancali Milking System, and it was born after Pedro Heller spent a year in the United States studying robotics to replace four rotary milking parlors that had reached the end of their useful life. This transition resulted in 10% more milk production, a longer average lactation period for the herd, and 40% less labor.
We walk through the entire operation: the flow of cows within the robotic milking unit, the sorting gates and milking permit, the robot milking inside, the PMR (Physical Milking Receptacle) and the pellet the cow receives in the robot, the genetics adapted to robotic milking, the manure treatment with sand recovery, the biodigesters that generate energy for the herd, and the in-house feed mill.

Robotic milking and automated milking systems (AMS). Free and guided cow traffic. Selector gates and one-way systems. Milking permits and visit frequency. Cows per robot and milking time. PMR (Physical Mixed Ration), partially mixed ration. Concentrate and pellets in the robot. Sand bedding, scraper, and thermal comfort. Mastitis detection by conductivity. Synchronization and voluntary waiting. Genotyping and selection for robotic milking. Circular economy: slurry, biodigester, biogas, cogeneration, and digestate. Corn, alfalfa, and oat-vetch silage. Cracking and Penn State screens. Pelletizing. Margin per liter.
ROBOTIC MILKING COURSE
With Dr. Trevor DeVries (University of Guelph), a world-renowned expert in dairy cow behavior and nutrition. This course covers the three key decisions that drive milk yield and margin: cow traffic and robot visits, PMR (Process Milk Reduction) and concentrate, and housing, leg health, and udder health.
Online classes at your own pace, in Spanish, with immediate access. Includes a certificate and 12 months of access to the international community.
