A number of folks have clearly missed one of my channel rules, which is: no dragging. Comments insulting or denigrating umpires, accusing racism or bias or is similarly abusive will be removed. If removing several of your comments gets annoying, you'll be blocked. Be constructive, or go somewhere else. Thanks!

Agree. If the attempt wasn't a foul, the goal was scored and the keeper was off the line then the result is a goal. Not a retake.

@beantsingh9208 1 year ago

It is crystal clear that the goal scored should have been allowed once it was found that the goal keeper committed offence before the penalty storke was taken.

The video referral was asked 'was the foot in front of the ball?' The answer was yes. But it doesn't even matter. Are they also not going to ask where the goalkeeper was when the ball was played, did the umpire not even see that? He was way off the line! The real question is 'was the ball hit?' . I believe that it wasn't and this was a clear goal.

Why is hockey not popular? They have made such stupid confusing rules that it has removed the fun from game

interesting how you have seen it, it was very frustrating game altogether, we were playing horrible and this just made it worse

I agrree with you maam .... respect from INDIA

I don't think they're questioning the player stepping past the ball, but his left foot started ahead of the ball, so he didn't stand behind the ball. The close angle doesn't show it as it's not side on. The further out one does

I'm still not clear on the actual action permitted in the propulsion of the ball in the taking of the stroke. Although mentioned briefly (1:01) that the keeper thinks that the ball was hit, this matter is then unresolved and subsumed by the next questions (foot placement, keeper movement).

Rule 13.7(i) states the ball must be pushed, flicked or scooped. When I first started playing, any player taking a stroke would flick (ie place stick head against the ball momentarily without it moving, then effectively push it maintaining the ball against the stick head). Not least because you had to get it off the bumpy grass (yes, a few years back!). I think the video only states to look at foot position as a guide as to whether it's been dragged or not.

The modern propensity for effectively an ice hockey slap with, crucially, hands apart (or else it's a hit, in my opinion, with hands together), seems to be allowed.
-are you aware of this being examined in more detail (or rules extrapolating it further)? Don't know if the FIH issue guidance notes. That same rule referred to has the interpretation italics that simply state you cannot drag it (again, when does a drag become a flick, given you can drag it without having both feet in front of the ball, ... a drag flick)?

Can you please make a video about the umpire positioning during an attack when the play is congested inside the circle?

Also, please make a video clearing the situation when to award a penalty corner and when it is penalty stroke?

Thank you.

@vree0108 1 year ago

Informative and appreciated analysis as always, Keely.

One question: does the VU protocol determine that the field umpire has to relay the players question as asked? The 'Foot before the ball' was an unclear question because probably the actual question was 'was it a drag flick?'. The VU answered the question correctly as asked but none of the 3 umps involved seem to have wondered at the moment if the foot before the ball was actually a foul. So, if the field ump was allowed to rephrase the question to an actual foul, the confusion was probably avoided.
