Is Barnwell Mountain worth the drive for a day of off-roading in East Texas?

We headed to Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area in Gilmer, Texas with one main goal: take on Clyde’s Ravine, one of Jeep’s limited Badge of Honor trails.

And Clyde’s delivered.

From rocky climbs and steep descents to a few hard hits and a Wrangler getting high-centered at the entrance to Clyde’s, this ended up being some of the best wheeling we’ve done in Texas.

But there was another question we wanted to answer. Living just east of Dallas puts us almost directly between Barnwell Mountain and Northwest OHV Park. With less than 10 minutes difference in drive time for us, which park would we choose when we just want to spend a day on the trails?

By the end of the day, we had an answer.

Glad you liked Bmra. And thank you for checking in on the badge trail. Myself and a few others were the ones that worked getting it on the list. The big drop in is actually supposed to be an exit not the entrance. I’ll be up there next month for my event and will be taking a chainsaw with me to take care of those 12” tall stumps.

I've been there numerous times and it's more off road/rock crawling than overlanding. Still has awesome views though, especially for east Texas.

think about it, 2 out of 5 isn't that much different than 7 out of 10. Don't think of the number but think of the location of the number. 2 is three levels below the highest #5, same with 7 is three levels below the highest #10.
