The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme is a war memorial to 72,337 missing British and South African servicemen who died in the Battles of the Somme of the First World War between 1915 and 1918, with no known grave. It is near the village of Thiepval, Picardy in France. A visitors' centre opened in 2004. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, Thiepval has been described as "the greatest executed British work of monumental architecture of the twentieth century".

My grandfather was one of those brave men at the battle of the somme and lived to come home, after going over the top being injured and unable to continue in the war and my great uncle was in the flying corp before the formation of the RAF - we owe so many so much it breaks my heart to see how disrespectful the future generations are towards such sacrifice 😢😢

My grandther served in the Navy during the first war. They were only children themselves having to fight a war caused by grown ups. He was only 17..how scary that had to be for them. We have to remember the fallen men & women so they did not lose their lives in vain. PLEASE GOD no more war. Thanks Bob & Jenny for the tour of the memorial & museum. ❤😊

Thank you for a very moving look about. Such places are both amazing and terrible - such losses and bravery. I watched this yesterday 04 Oct which was the date in 1917 when my great-uncle was killed at Zonnebeke. He is on the Menin Gate alongside his brother-in-law who was killed by the same shell. The brother-in-law's twin brother witnessed the event and wrote home. He survived the war.

We went here last year Bob to pay our respects to my Great Uncle John who has his name on the memorial. I have a photo of him, a stunning very young man who was lost in 1917. His sister (my great grandmother) said his mother and all the family never ever got over his loss and grieved till the end of her days.
In a small way I went here to keep his memory alive for them.

Thanks for the video. My great grandfather is remembered at Thievpal, we have been many times and on the 100 anniversary. Mustered on 6th July 1916, missed mustered, considered KIA 7th to July 1916. The memorial “is a place to remember those we never knew” Lest we forget x
