A PLACE IN THE SUN (1951) - MOVIE REACTION - First Time Watching

The Coby Show

A Place in the Sun is a 1951 American tragedy film based on the 1925 novel An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser and the 1926 play, also titled An American Tragedy. It tells the story of a working-class young man who is entangled with two women; one works in his wealthy uncle's factory and the other is a beautiful socialite. Another adaptation of the novel had been filmed once before, as An American Tragedy, in 1931. All these works were inspired by the real-life murder of Grace Brown by Chester Gillette in 1906, which resulted in Gillette's conviction and execution by electric chair in 1908. A Place in the Sun was directed by George Stevens from a screenplay by Harry Brown and Michael Wilson, and stars Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters and Keefe Brasselle.

The fact that Elizabeth Taylor not only saved Montgomery Clift's life in 1956, but that she also risked hurting her career threatening reporters and photographers who were trying to get a picture of him in his severely injured state... That tells you everything you need to know about their friendship. She always spoke of him as her 'brother' and her best friend even long after he'd passed.

Thank you Coby! I know this might not get all the views, but this movie holds a special place in my heart. Thank you for giving my humble suggestion a Youtube premiere!! 🥰

It probably won’t pull in the views, but this is the type of movie I’d like to see you react to. Old, in other words.

Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor were amoung the best young rising stars when this movie premiered in 1951. He was 31, she was 19. They became lifelong friends.

Other people have commented in other videos about this but I'm so glad that you react to films that haven't been exhaustively covered by other YouTube reactors.

Above all, you have to admire Coby for LOVING movies so much. It’s infectious.

The Prosecutor was Raymond Burr, best known for playing Perry Mason on TV, but you'd know him as Jimmy Stewart's neighbor, who he thought murdered his wife in "Rear Window".

Definitely check out “From Here to Eternity” (1953).

These old movies actually unfold for the viewer instead of spoonfeeding everything like today's films.

This channel just gets better & better. Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift are two icons of American cinema. Giants. Titans. Mythological. Both of them, in different ways, embody beauty meeting tragedy. This is epic Hollywood.

A Place in the Sun (1951) was based on the novel “An American Tragedy” by Theodore Dreiser. I guess they didn’t think they would sell as many movie tickets if they kept the original title.

James Dean was a big fan of Montgomery Clift and cited him as a huge influence. Dean saw A Place in the Sun every chance he got.

For more of Montgomery Clift, also check out The Heiress with Olivia de Havilland, and I Confess with Anne Baxter directed by Alfred Hitchcock. I think you'd enjoy them both!

Clift's breakout was in a great Western: "Red River" opposite John Wayne. On of the best westerns

You reacted to Shelley Winters on Popcorn Roulette in The Poseidon Adventure, she was the older lady who was a really good swimmer in her youth, she saved Gene Hackman's character after he became trapped under water.

This truly is a classic film. The acting, direction and cinematography are all perfect!

Watching Montgomery Clift in this film, you see where James Dean got his influence.

Amazing reaction, amazing movie.....thanks Coby for doing this one and thanks Chase for recommending it...truly awesome film.

So glad you're doing another classic. "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" 1958 is another great one with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman.

My mom told me that whenthis film came out, every young woman wanted the dress Elizabeth Taylor wore when she was in the billiard room. Apparently, they were made as prom dresses and were wildly popular.

The young boy scout that sees George leave the lake and later testifies about it, is the same actor that played the young George Bailey in It's A Wonderful Life.
