It's July of 2025, and I'm so grateful that someone picked up a camera, long ago, and made record of this craftsmanship, this skill. These are men. God bless 'em 🌹

There was a time, when you would chop down trees and then allow them many decades to age before using them for building. In essence these men could have been using timber which had been felled by their fathers or Grandfathers before them. In Italy it used to be the practice amongst families in the plastering trade, that when a young man got married one of the first things he did was dig a pit, fill it with gypsum/lime or similar and then cover it over and leave it for his future son to inherit(as a plasterer). Over 20 years the material would mature and develop such that it made fine plastering material. They were not just thinking about themselves, but also making provision for the next generation.

Those old men are stronger in every way compared to modern people.

Back when saying it was a hard day's work, it meant exactly that! ❤

This should also be an ode to the blacksmith that made all these tools that these men are using so well.

A lost art, skills that got us to where we are now. Talented men.

You know that when things like this look easy it's because of great skill, experience, knowledge, and wisdom.

We are really losing not only this knowledge, with its tools and techniques, but also the connection between humans.

Skill is accumulated with time and experience
Stamina is accumulated from plain HARD WORK

I’m 66 and had 2 grandads like this. Hardly said a a word to me but they taught me so  much.

The strength and stamina in their forearms is impressive. I recently took a very large mesquite stump down with an axe, splitting maul, and chainsaw, and my arms were sore for a few days. These old timers never skipped a beat. Respect.

The plan is in the mind! Each man knows what the other is doing and the steps are flawlessly followed. We are losing this knowledge and these tools and techniques.

15 years ago, I did the same kind of work during a historic shipbuilding project in Lüneburg, Germany. It can be seen in our old medieval harbour.

Step 1: Cut down round tree
Step 2: Make round tree a square log
Step 3: Make square log into round log

Just fantastic. What a privilege to be able to still witness such craftsmanship and skill in 2025, regardless that the need for this amazing talent, is long gone.❤
