The Royal Guard from Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, 5 SCOTS, were under the command of Major Tommy Blair MBE and were lined up ready for inspection by His Majesty the King. With them was the royal favourite, Shetland pony, Corporal Cruachan IV, mascot of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
The band were the Pipes, Drums and Bugles of 2 SCOTS (The Royal Highland Fusiliers) the official military pipe band of the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
The King took time to chat to some of the soldiers present and also with members of the public, who had gathered at the Gates of Balmoral Estate in Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He also spoke to the two Balmoral Highlanders, standing by the Gates to Balmoral, who have only recently been reformed after a long absence.
