My dad owned a fastback styled Hillman Imp Californian for about 18 months from mid-1975. It was his first car. And after doing a replica version of his Vauxhall Firenza, he asked me to take this 1/43 scale Vanguards Californian and redo it in the same spec as his Imp.

Lledo's Vanguards range was a fairly short lived but highly detailed line of mostly British marques in true 1/43 scale. They were taken on by Corgi following Lledo's 1999 bankruptcy. This isn't only my first foray into Vanguards, but also my first into 1/43 scale.

The Imp I picked up had both wing mirrors snapped off and had glue covering the bonnet and surrounds to the front left headlight. One of the jewels had seemingly fallen out and had haphazardly been glued back in. So while otherwise looking like a good model, it was certainly rough around the edges. Handily, the wheels matched that of my dad's Imp, so it was a case of sourcing new lights, mirrors and giving it a custom paint job.
